Teachers' Guide
Teachers' Guide
Google Classroom will be used by faculty for communicating with students (and to parents) at MUMS and MUHS.
Google Classroom will be used to:
Share class announcements
Share resources which can include a class agenda
Share a calendar where all assignment and assessment dates will be posted on the day they are assigned (To clarify, this does not mean you are posting your actual assessment, unless that is a choice you make. We just want the calendar to accurately reflect what is going on in the classroom in a timely manner. This helps students, parents, and support personnel.)
Feedback should be given to students, and this will be left to you as the classroom teacher to determine whether this is directly on the work, electronic, or in the comments in PowerSchool.
However, the location of the feedback and comments beyond the score(s) should be noted in the comments in PowerSchool. (For example, "Further feedback available on X essay is on the Google Doc assignment itself.")
The gradebook in Google Classroom will NOT be used. All formative and summative assessments scores MUST be entered into PowerSchool.
Once a formative or summative is assigned in Google Classroom, it should also be created in PowerSchool.
Although you are free to add scores directly to your rubrics that are attached in ANY Google Classroom assignment, the actual recording of grades need to be on PowerSchool and NOT in Google Classroom Gradebook.
Overview
Main Dashboard
The Stream is where activity from your classroom appears. For example when you add new resources or assignments.
It is also where teachers can make announcements to the whole class.
In the Classwork section, you can organize your course materials and assignments to share with students.
This is where you will add your:
class agenda (if you wish)
resources for students to use
assignments and tasks that students need to complete
Creating in Classwork allows you to:
Create new topics (headings/sections)
Assignments
Assessments
Ask a question
Share resources
When creating an assignment, as well as attaching links and documents, you can also add a practice set.
This is a little like a Google Form Quiz, but depending on your point of view potentially more powerful!
It is called a practice set because students can check whether they are correct or not and also receive hints.
The People section should be populated automatically with Little SIS integration with PowerSchool.
For example, as well as your Google Classroom is being automatically created, your students' and parents' emails should automatically be added with the integration.
However, this section does allow you to email parents and students individually, which can be a great time saver.
Other options like Remove should not be required, as students should automatically be added and removed as this changes on PowerSchool.
For the most part, the Grades section on Google Classroom should be ignored, as all grades should be added directly to PowerSchool.
It is VITAL to be consistent here as we want all stakeholders - you, colleagues, principals, students and parents to know that PowerSchool is where they go to see grades.
We cannot turn off the Grades feature in classroom, but DO NOT USE it!
One of the reasons is that we do not want you to have to duplicate work. The second is parents are unable to see grades in Google Classroom.
