Commitment
Commitment is a fundamental value that is crucial in our efforts to achieve the goals set out before us. It can be understood as a responsibility, pledge or dedication towards an activity or cause. However, steadfast commitment does not always guarantee success and might not bear fruit all the time. Nevertheless, it is quintessential in building our character through times of challenge and hardship. Recognising this has enabled me to strive on tenaciously through many difficulties that I have overcome since graduating from ACS(BR).
The school value of commitment instilled into me a deep sense of responsibility and determination to carry out my duties as the rugby captain of the ACJC team. My role as the rugby captain was quite a peculiar one as I did not participate in any competitions due to a severe facial injury that left me with three metal implants in my face and another in my eye socket. Despite this injury and a bleak chance to play the game, my coach still believed in my potential to lead the team and thus appointed me as captain. It was a gargantuan task as I was still grappling with the reality that I could no longer play the game I love, let alone lead the team. Nonetheless, I found courage in God and support from family and friends, which reminded me that 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me'. With this assurance, I fixed my eyes upon the goal and decided to run this race well. I had to adapt to leading the team with a different approach but ultimately managed to achieve our set goals. Throughout this process, the school value of commitment resonated with me each step of the way and helped me to remain focused on my duty and goals.
Indeed, the value of commitment builds our character, which enables us to overcome many situations in life. In my opinion, it acts as one of the many values that echo our motto of 'The Best Is Yet To Be'.
