The relationship between knowledge and technology is not something new. Humankind has always sought a way to understand the world and to find solutions to the problems they face by appealing to technological advancements. This relationship has, in a way, been a virtuous cycle since technological advances have been both the result of, and the inspiration for, new discoveries (and, by extension, advances in knowledge).
Have you ever wondered how much more knowledge there is left for humankind to develop? Do you think that by improving technologies we will be able to find more answers to what is currently unknown? Or will new technologies perhaps bring us more questions?
5 minutes - Technology should not be thought of as simply the means that enables us to increase our knowledge, but also as a trigger or a tool that establishes a totally new mindset that allows us to think beyond the apparent possibilities.
No matter what kinds of problems humanity may be facing, technology can help us to understand ourselves and the world in a deeper way. This subtopic does not focus on specific uses of technology. Instead, it considers the ways in which technology affects knowledge and knowers. It gives the opportunity to discuss central issues related to TOK, such as:
Is it legitimate for products that are created by computers and other technologies to be perceived as knowledge?
Is it possible that technological advancements will force us to redefine knowledge?
Classes will run differently during this AOK as you will be working independently in your POD group of no more than 4 people. You will work through the Kognity Chapters together, discussing the content and watching the videos.
At the end of Each Class you will prepare a PROMPT or QUESTION that you will post to the other groups to discuss at the beginning of their next class.
At the beginning of Each Class you will in your Pods answer the questions posed by the other groups and place them on the PADLET prepared. Organize your questions and prompts - have your Title as the DATE of the class. Then write your question below - Each group will indicate a colour for their Pod - so we can always see who has answered the question. You will respond to their question directly as a comment underneath - so we know who you are for follow up.
When you have answered your questions (including citations) as a group, you will continue to study through the Kognity work together as a group. At the end of this class - you will prepare a PROMPT or QUESTION that you will post to the other groups to discuss at the beginning of the next class - and so on until we get to the end of the Kognity work.
When we get to the end of the Kognity Chapters and have completed all question prompts in the kognity online book- you will then work on the next stage of the project - where you will lead an activity and lesson on content that you will create for the class.
The way in which you will be finalizing the Tech Area of Knowledge is through some group work and presentations.
Your POD group that you worked in as a study group going through the Kognity chapters together will also be your group for the presentation. You will consider each section of the online book together as a team - discussing key components and trying to delve into the content as you deep as you can.
As a group you will then take a concept from the Kognity data and find a project that you will teach a lesson on. You will find 3 examples of lessons in the Group folder and you will design your lesson and activity in a similar process.
The lesson/presentation you will create, teach and deliver should encompass specific sections of this required information you need to know and understand. (found in Blue on the left).
Your group will come up with a plan, identify some key activity points or discussion points and then teach a lesson that will last 20 minutes minimum of the class period.
Consider using some of the Suggested activities that are found in the Kognity book and consider perhaps using a combination to find ways to tackle the content in the blue box.
Your group will sign up and indicate which of the bullet points you have in your project on the document provided.
The expectation is that your project you develop, plan, and prepare will encompass at least 4 out of the 10 points in the blue box. You will indicate this on the Google document, along with the members of your team, and a link to the Shared document you will use for planning and preparation. You will create a folder in the shared google drive with your POD number on it, and hold all planning documentation in this folder.
You will need to make a lesson that will use the entire 20 minutes of class time. Consider how to create a lesson that will engage the audience, have them think about your points, and be able to finalize your concepts and summarize the learning involved. You can use any information we have studied this year to help create this project - however your sources must be cited, you must have all members of your team introduce and run a portion of the lesson, and you must all contribute to the planning and preparation of the lesson.
