Summer and Online Learning Procedures and Information
Remedial Summer Courses: Students who achieve 40-49% in a course required for graduation must take a remedial course in Summer School. A remedial course is designed to top-up one's learning and fill any gaps in understanding. Remedial courses are offered through SD 43. If your teacher has recommended that you take a remedial course for summer school, please email your GLA in Student Services to set up an appointment. Recommendations for summer school will be made through the April report card in an IE form, and again in May as confirmation.
Summer Learning Course Retakes: Students who achieve under 40% in a course required for graduation must retake the course. This can be done through summer school, or online through any accredited BC school. If your teacher has recommended that you retake a course in summer school or online, please email your GLA in Student Services to set up an appointment. Recommendations for summer school will be made through the April report card in an IE form, and again in May as confirmation.
Advanced Credits/Online Learning: Some students will elect to take extra courses through summer school or online. Others may wish to preview a course in summer school that they intend to take at ACRSS during the school year. This can be done through any accredited school in BC.
Students wishing to do Summer Learning Course Retakes or Advanced Credits/Online Learning must complete the form located

In order to maintain the integrity of the diploma that graduates receive from Archbishop Carney Regional Secondary School, all courses required for graduation MUST be taken at the school.

Can I take more than one course online or in the summer?
Students are permitted to take a maximum of two courses in the summer.
Does online learning need to be completed in the summer, and can I have a free block to work on it during the school year?

Summer School & Online Courses: Carney’s School Policy Explained
What is the school policy on taking online or summer school courses?
Any course that is required for graduation must be taken once in person at school. When you graduate from Carney, it is important that your diploma represents that you have completed all graduation requirements to the school’s standard.
The school recognizes that students may wish to take more courses than their in-school timetable allows. Additional courses (electives) may be taken online or in summer school.
I want to take multiple science courses. Does this mean they all have to be done in school?
No. You must fulfill the graduation requirement IN SCHOOL. Consider the following:
~ A Science 11 is required for graduation. A student may wish to take multiple science courses in grade 11. A student can, for example, take Physics 11 in summer school (as an elective), as long as they take another science 11 course in school to fulfill the graduation requirement (ie. Life Sciences 11 or Chemistry 11).
I want to take Pre-Calculus 11 in summer school so that I can take Pre-Calculus 12 in my grade 11 year at Carney. Can I do that?
No. In this case, a Math 11 course is required for graduation. This course must be completed in person at school.
If I take a Science 11 course in summer school, can I complete the grade 12 version of the course at ACRSS in person?
We STRONGLY advise against doing this. If you intend to take the upper level course at ACRSS, it would be best that the lower level course be completed at ACRSS as well in order for you to be best prepared for success. Taking courses in summer school can be convenient, but learning is also often not as deep or thorough due to the compressed nature of summer courses. We typically find that students who take courses in the summer are simply not as well equipped as those who complete courses in the building for the next level.
I failed a required course at Carney. Can I take it again in summer school so as not to be behind?
Yes. If you were not able to successfully complete a course at Carney, in order to stay on track for graduation you may entirely retake the course or take the remedial version of the course in summer school (depending on your your in-school).
