What prerequisites/qualities must I have to do well for this subject?
There is no prerequisites for H1 Art and students who would like to take up H2 Art will need to obtained either A or B grade for their GCE 'O' Level Art Level or pass a proficiency test... and this is the easy part. However in order to do well for the subject, we need our students to come with an open mind and to suspend any prior judgment of what they have learnt about this subject. It will be a time of rediscovery for themselves to understand who they are and what the subject can be. We also expect our students to engage in art discussions during lessons and have meaningful art conversations our committed tutors so that ideas may flow and students can continue to sharpen their skills and concepts.
Does this subject take up a lot of time?
Yes it does... and so are the rest of the H2 subjects. It comes down to your goals, convictions and time management. Curriculum time per week for JC1s is around 4.5 hours for H2 and 2 hours for H1. Lessons typically do not end beyond 5pm.
What are some of the most popular/suitable subject combinations for students taking art? Are there any restrictions?
Our Art students come from very diverse background and with unique aspirations. Hence, they all have very different subject combinations and it is very difficult to pinpoint to any particular popular subject combination. Interestingly, many of our students are more science-y who took H2 Science subjects with H1/H2 Art. Most of these Science students did not even do 'O' level Art and they did very well for the exam.
