Education Act 2002
Section 175 for maintained schools and regulations under Section 157 for academies

Keeping Children Safe In Education guidance (KCSIE)
sets out the legal duties all schools must follow to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people under the age of 18 in schools and colleges.
Governors/Trustees should read KCSIE to make sure they are aware of their duties and responsibilities.
Governors/Trustees need to read the Maintained Schools Governance Guide, or the Academy Trust Governance Guide.
This guidance explains what the governing body’s/trust’s safeguarding roles and responsibilities are.
Everybody working in a school or college must understand their safeguarding responsibilities.
The governing board should:
demonstrate that safeguarding is a priority
be aware of how safeguarding arrangements are being managed by the school
monitor the effectiveness of the school’s safeguarding arrangements
