Our goal in the World Language Department at GHS is to prepare students to understand and to interact with people from diverse cultures.

At GHS World Language classes are conducted primarily in the target language. Teachers will model the target language and students will have ample opportunities to use the target language as the major means of communication inside and outside of the classrooms. Developing cultural competency is crucial to linguistic proficiency.

All language students become culturally competent by being exposed to the target language in a natural, culturally appropriate, and real-life context.

Our proficiency goals are consistent with the standards set forth in the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

In addition to meeting the needs of future students, language learning has been shown to greatly enhance student performance across the curriculum. Language learning has been shown to improve a student’s cognitive function, including, but not limited to:

  • Enhanced Problem Solving Skills

  • Improved Verbal and Spatial Abilities

  • Improved Memory Function (long & short-term)

  • Enhanced Creative Thinking Capacity

  • Better Memory

  • More Flexible and Creative Thinking

  • Improved Attitude Toward the Target Language and Culture.
