We're looking for transcribers and verifiers.
You'll need to have at least elementary knowledge of Slovak given names and place names. Any previous participation in records transcription is a bonus.
Creating a Searchable Database
As a team of volunteers, we are all working towards making the names from various census and tax records accessible as a searchable database on the JewishGen website. Our goal is to provide error free transcriptions of the census so that others may benefit. These instructions have been established to help meet that goal. Included here are explanations of the project roles, process, rules for both transcription and validation, and some helpful hints about reading the old script.
The process will involve copies of these images being distributed to transcribers who will then transcribe names from the census or tax list images directly into a Microsoft Excel of Google Sheet spreadsheets. The spreadsheets will be electronically sent to a validator who will serve as a double check to help ensure accurate transcriptions. Once the database has been constructed, it will be forwarded to JewishGen for loading into the All-Hungary database.
Completion of Volunteer Agreement
All volunteers who have not already done so for other projects will be required to submit a JewishGen Volunteer Agreement on a form that can be downloaded from the JewishGen website at: https://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen/agree/volunteer.asp
When filling out the form, put Transcriber or Validator (as the case may be) on the line for volunteer assignment; put "1930 Czechoslovak Census" as the name of the project, and put Peter Absolon as the name of the project coordinator.

The Roles
COORDINATOR
The COORDINATOR will be responsible for:
1. Finding volunteer TRANSCRIBERS and VALIDATORS
2. Organizing assignments for the volunteers
3. Managing the transcription, computer entry, and validation of the data
4. Facilitating communication across the group
5. Combining the individually-submitted spreadsheets into a single database
6. Packaging the database for submission to JewishGen
7. Providing periodic status reports to the Hungarian Research Division community
TRANSCRIBERS
TRANSCRIBERS will extract names from the original census and tax records using graphic images sent to them by the COORDINATOR and enter the information directly into an Excel or Google spreadsheet. TRANSCRIBERs will be responsible for strict adherence to the rules established for transcription described later in these instructions. This will facilitate data entry and help ensure uniform, consistent, and accurate transcriptions.
VALIDATORS
VALIDATORS will check names that have been transcribed onto the spreadsheets against names appearing on the census and tax list images. The VALIDATOR will not be the same person who entered the data being validated. The COORDINATOR may also serve as a VALIDATOR.
