Use the Creative Commons Search Tool. Creators of these works have chosen to share their materials. You may use these items in any academic work. Pay attention to the individual requirements of each item (i.e. giving credit, no commercial ($$) use).

Public Domain: Works in the Public Domain are not protected by copyright. Add the phrase "public domain" to your search to find these images.
Every creative work is covered by copyright (yes - even yours!) This means that the creator (or owner) of the work gets to decide when the work is published, how it is shared, and how it will be used (i.e. will it be sold for a profit?)
What material can you use?

Creative Commons licenses allow work to be used following the rules set by the creators.
Items that are in the Public Domain are no longer covered by Copyright and are also available for use.
Google Image Search You can limit your Google search results to show only items available under Creative Commons licenses.
1. Conduct your search (example is puppy toys)
2. Find the grey, rectangular Tools button
3. Click Usage Rights and then select "Creative Commons licenses"
