Interviewing tips - before the interview

Understand what the position requirements are and review your qualifications for the job. Job descriptions are a “wish list” for the position; ask yourself: “Why am I the best person for the job?” Use your resume. cover letter or letter of interest to answer this question.

Prepare for the interview

Review typical interview questions and practice your responses before you go. If possible, arrange a practice interview. Ask a family member or friend to ask you questions, so you can practice your answers.

Dress for success

Choose simple, neat and appropriate attire for the position. Business casual is usually appropriate. For example, slacks and a collared shirt of polo for men, and pants, skirt or dress for women is professional dress. A jacket and tie are optional, but for more formal settings like banks, hotels or other formal business settings, it will make a good first impression. Avoid jeans, tee shirts, sneakers, hats, bare midriffs and plunging necklines, heavy makeup or perfumes, showy jewelry, very short skits and very high heels. Remember, you only get one change to make a first impression. Once you are working at the site, you will follow the company's dress cods. However, taking the time to dress professionally indicates motivation and interest in the position.

Bring your resume

If you have sent a resume in advance of your interview, then be sure to bring a few copies of the resume on resume paper if possible. Resume paper is a heavier paper that is more formal. While you may have sent your resume electronically prior to the interview, when you bring copies, a nice quality paper can create a professional impression. It may help you stand out from the other candidates.

Be prepared

Bring pad and paper to take notes, get directions and plan your transportation to the site. It is a good idea to take a “dry run” to the interview site so that you will know how much time to plan for travel, factoring in the time of day, possible traffic and parking. This will help you avoid getting lost and arrive on time. Arrive a few minutes early.

Pease note: If you are under the age of 18, you may need to bring working papers. You may also want to bring information to complete an application if you think you may be asked to do that at the interview.
