AAS Field Trips – 2026 schedule (Must be a Current Member of AAS)

Field Trip Saturday March 28, 2026  -  Rinconada Canyon 

AAS Field Trip to Rinconada Canyon on March 28. 

Field trip April 25, 2026   -    Pueblo Pintado

The AAS Field Trip to Pueblo Pintado was guided by Ann Braswell on April 25. 

Field Trip Sunday May 17, 2026   -    La Cebolla ranch 

Following the March 17th speaker Bob Roland’s presentation of the subject of his book The Ballad of Placida Romero and the La Cebolla Ranch, we went on a field trip at Mr. Roland’s invitation to the La Cebolla Ranch. Mr. Roland accompanied us. The La Cebolla ranch is east and south of Grants, off Hwy 117.

The tour was open to 12 AAS members. We had high clearance vehicles and carpooled.  The trip started in morning and lasted until midafternoon.  We saw the setting of the ranch and the remaining walls. These walls came to life with Mr. Roland’s description of what happened in 1881.

Field Trip Saturday July 25, 2026   -   Mary Cabot Wheelwright Museum

The group visited the Mary Cabot Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe. We divided into two groups for docent-led tours of the museum, which was designed in the shape of a traditional Navajo hogan.  The museum was originally established to preserve and interpret the work of Hosteen Klah, a renowned Navajo medicine man, weaver, and ceremonial leader, and his close friendship with museum founder Mary Cabot Wheelwright. A bust of Hosteen Klah is shown here in a photograph with one of the museum docents.  

The tours included several outstanding contemporary exhibitions: Emmi Whitehorse (Diné), Intimate Landscapes (paintings); Julian Lovato (Santo Domingo Pueblo), Silver Honors Stone (jewelry); and Virgil Ortiz (Cochiti Pueblo), Gestural Form. We also viewed an exhibit tracing the evolution of Native jewelry from the 1800s to the present.

Field Saturday September 26, 2026:   -   Rowe Mesa

Rowe Mesa: Two rock art panel sites are located on Rowe Mesa. Site One is about 20 minutes from Rowe, Site Two, 20 minutes from Site One. Each site is about 100 yards from the road. There is no trail to the sites, but area is flat with a slight incline,  The vegetation is short. It is open pinyon/pine forest similar to around Santa Fe.  Elevation: of Rowe is 6,780 feet; The sites are at 7,220 to 7,240 feet. The maximum elevation change at the site is about 10-15 feet.

2025 Field Trip Summary

 Saturday May 17, 2025: Ponderosa area trip to the two Pueblos that was rained out previously happened this time.  Great trip. Enjoyed by all.

Saturday June 21, 2025: Tsankawi Pueblo, Bandelier National Monument.  Updated cultural tour, petroglyphs, cavates and more - great trip.

Friday July 11, 2025: Trip to OAS Research Laboratories is a follow-on to the Shelby Jones Seminar.  Toured the newly reorganized laboratories.  One of a kind experimental equipment - good trip.

Saturday September 27, 2025: Field trip to Chacoan Great House, CANCELLED, got rained out

2024 Field Trip Summary

Saturday January 27, 2024: Special Tour of Albuquerque Museum.

Sunday February 25, 2024: Special Tour of Albuquerque Museum, Coast to Coast to Coast Exhibit with Carol Chamberland as our docent.

Saturday April 27, 2024: Docent led tour of the Allan Hauser Sculpture Garden, south of Santa Fe.

Saturday May 18, 2024: Docent led tour of the Bosque Redondo Memorial at the Fort Sumner Historic Site.

Saturday July 13, 2024: Hike in the Santa Fe National Forest near Valles Caldera, Rabbit Mountain area, led by member and experienced hiker/guide Earlene Shroyer.

Sunday July 14, 2024, visit to the Albuquerque Museum’s exhibit “The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts”, Carol Chamberland will be our docent – always an outstanding tour leader.
