AAS Field Trips – 2025 schedule (Must be a Current Member of AAS)

Trips include easy, moderate, and strenuous levels of effort.  We hope to accommodate the interests and physical condition of all our members.

 Saturday May 17, 2025: Ponderosa area trip to the two Pueblos that was rained out previously happened this time.  Great trip. Enjoyed by all.

Saturday June 21, 2025: Tsankawi Pueblo, Bandelier National Monument.  Updated cultural tour, petroglyphs, cavates and more

Saturday September 27, 2025: Field trip to Chacoan Great House, Pueblo Pintado

Pueblo Pintado is one of the most beautiful of the Great Houses. It dates to AD 1060-61.  We will also explore nearby smaller structures.  The terrain is hummocky but easily walkable.  Parking is close to the site.

Saturday, October 18, 2025: Field trip to Rinconada Canyon, Petroglyph National Monument.

Tour Guide: Archaeologist Nick Jarman, National Park Service

Leader: Ann Braswell

Special Rinconada Canyon Petroglyph Tour including Star glyph, Shalako, rattlesnake, parrot, masks, frog, and many more of the ~1200 petroglyphs in the canyon.  The terrain is mostly flat, easy walking. Walking mileage, 2 ¼ miles. The tour is in the morning and will finish at noon.

-- Fall 2025:   Explore Obsidian Sites with Steve Shackley. This trip is a follow-up to the Seminar where Dr Shackley discussed obsidian sites throughout the southwest. This trip is to Mt Taylor region.  

-- Potential trip to the Apache pictographs, requires US Forest Service permission. 

-- Tentatively scheduled a field trip to Quarai or Abo, planning stage.

-- Possible trip to Pueblo Blanco which is on state managed land.

-- San Jose de Las Huertas in Placitas, Archaeological Conservancy Site - arrangement assisted by members

-- Potential Albuquerque Museum tour for new exhibits.

2024 Field Trip Summary

Saturday January 27, 2024: Special Tour of Albuquerque Museum.

Sunday February 25, 2024: Special Tour of Albuquerque Museum, Coast to Coast to Coast Exhibit with Carol Chamberland as our docent.

Saturday April 27, 2024: Docent led tour of the Allan Hauser Sculpture Garden, south of Santa Fe.

Saturday May 18, 2024: Docent led tour of the Bosque Redondo Memorial at the Fort Sumner Historic Site.

Saturday July 13, 2024: Hike in the Santa Fe National Forest near Valles Caldera, Rabbit Mountain area, led by member and experienced hiker/guide Earlene Shroyer.

Sunday July 14, 2024, visit to the Albuquerque Museum’s exhibit “The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts”, Carol Chamberland will be our docent – always an outstanding tour leader.
