Albuquerque Archaeological Society

Welcome to our website!

Our mission is to advocate the preservation of archaeological and other cultural resources, the education of members and the public about archaeological and ethnological subjects through our meetings, lectures, newsletter, other electronic media, field trips, volunteer efforts, field surveys, seminars, and studies.

Please browse around our website, check out current and past member activities.  If you find an activity that interests you, consider joining our organization.  Trips, seminars, and volunteer projects require membership.  Monthly lectures are free for the general public.

The 2025 meeting theme is “Archaeology of the Greater Middle Rio Grande Area.” This area includes the Rio Grande from Cochiti to Socorro, a portion of the Galisteo Basin, as well as the Salinas Province. Latest area research will be presented.

Our lecture series covers wide-ranging topics of archaeological interest.

Scholarly lectures are presented by experts in their respective disciplines.  Always interesting, informative, and on the current cutting edge of research.  If you have an interest in archaeology or are just curious about what archeologists do, stop by the third Tuesday of the month and listen to our lecture.  It's free.  We would be happy to meet you.  After the lecture there are refreshments and a chance to talk to the speaker and the AAS members.

A glance at some of our recent activities.

More extensive descriptions of these activities are shown throughout this website (Maxwell Lab, Trips, Rock Art, Seminars).

The Society also publishes Pottery Southwest, one of the Southwest's foremost publications on ceramics.

During the covid pandemic we continued Society activities but to more limited extent via the Zoom App.  Business meetings and lectures continued to be held, and these were recorded using Zoom. Lab work at the Maxwell Museum and trips were suspended.

After the covid lock-down was lifted, the in-person meetings resumed, and the Zoom recordings continued as well.  These recordings are included on the website Zoom Lectures section.  Lab work at the Maxwell Museum Lab resumed as did the trips to Museums and destinations of archaeological interest.  Additionally, the seminars restarted.

The Albuquerque Archaeological Society Newsletter is the official record for the Society as specified in the bylaws.  Meeting business details, lecture summaries, reports from active committees, and other topics of interest are included.  For convenience, links to the current newsletter and past newsletters are below.
