The ABC is a member of CIS, LAHC and a committed to the principles of Safe Recruitment. The ABC is aware of the responsibilities to protect young people from potential staff members who will not safeguard them properly or indeed may abuse them. In line with recommendations made by the International Task Force on Child Protection the ABC follows best practice, working as a team and training recruiters accordingly. Our priority is the health, safety and well-being of our students and we will seek to recruit staff who meet our high standards, respecting the rights, needs and well-being of children in line with our ABC values and guiding statements.
Our recruitment and employment practices seek to ensure the ABC:
Discourages and prevents unsuitable people from working with children and young people
Rejects candidates who do not meet appropriate background checks or express inappropriate views or understanding of safeguarding
Promotes safe working practices and challenge those practices that are poor or unsafe
Appoints the most suited applicants to the post as specified by the Job and Person Specifications
Supervises new staff to ensure their behaviour is appropriate in a school context where they are trusted with the well-being of young people.
Key elements of our Safe Recruitment are:
Robust recruitment and selection processes including interview training for staff
Interviews will help relevant questions to establish whether
Identity, written reference and background checks from previous schools or places of employment
Rigorous vetting and checking processes
Verification that candidates have the physical, emotional and mental capacity for the specific role they have applied for
Complete CVs and disclosure of convictions
Strong induction, probation, appraisal and performance management systems
Willingness to sign an abide by ABC Staff Code of Conduct
All school leaders and those on our interview panels understand the importance of the safe recruitment process and the importance of suitable questions to identify possible issues.
The ABC advertises its posts in professional journals or with reputable recruitment agencies and carries out its own background checks. At least two and preferably more references will be expected, one of whom must be the current employer and our reference request includes specific questions which address child protection. You will also be required to self declare any convictions or industrial tribunals. Acceptable background checks include extended DBS, ICPC background checks, identity checks, appropriate references, fitness and medical checks and qualification checks. Recruiting staff will check the websites of schools or institutions applicants are coming from to confirm their place of work. Prior to final appointment recruiters will directly contact a person or institution from the website of that institution to confirm identity and suitability to work with young people. In the event of any misleading or omitted information the School reserves the right to terminate the contract.
Safer recruitment continues once staff are appointed through induction, observation and regular training. The ABC only seeks to appoint staff who are committed to working with young people in a respectful and positive manner and are aware of their responsibilities for promoting the emotional development of young people in a safe environment. Police Check details
In El Salvador we require the following documents for locally recruited staff:
Copy of DUI, NIT, ISSS card, AFP Card (150% size)
Copy of degree and teaching certificates/diplomas
Police check (solvencia y antecedentes penales)
International Child Protection Certificate - ICPC (if you are a UK national or UK based) PLUS a Police Clearance Certificate from your current country of residence (if it is not the UK).
Salvadorian authorities and the ABC require police clearance from countries you live or have lived in. You will need to get the ICPC certificate if you are living and working in the UK or if you are a UK national currently working overseas (who will also need a police clearance check from the host country).
If you are not UK based or you are currently working outside the UK you need the ICPC equivalent from the police force in your own host country of origin and the country in which you are currently working.
The ICPC check is for UK citizens and is an international version of the DBS checks which UK employers carry out but the ICPC can be initiated by prospective employees and we as your employers can then check the ICPC certificate provided by you against your identity documentation. This service costs in the region of 60 pounds and will be refunded by the school. Similarly we will refund reasonable costs for any similar service provided by other countries for new appointments. You will be contacted directly concerning these issues soon after the offer of an appointment.
