Approaches to learning (AtL) are skills specifically designed to empower students in the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) to develop the ability to "learn how to learn." They are meant to be applicable across different subject areas and serve as a common language for both teachers and students to use when reflecting on and enhancing the learning process. Approaches to learning (AtL) are deeply integrated into the MYP curriculum and complement the IB Learner Profile.
These learning skills are grounded in the belief that mastering the art of learning is fundamental to a student's educational journey. They encompass five categories of skills that are interwoven throughout units of inquiry, aimed at fostering students' development into self-regulated learners. These learners actively pose questions, set learning objectives, and explore their personal interests through inquiry.
Furthermore, these learning skills play a crucial role in promoting student agency and encourage learners to view learning as an "active and dynamic process." from Principles into Practice, Teaching and Learning. IB Publishing.
