MYP Assessment and Reporting
Documenting learning describes the progress and achievement of your child’s learning, identifies areas for growth and provides opportunities for parent/teacher conversations connected to learning. At ABA, teachers use a variety of assessment tools to find out what your child knows, understands and can do.
Assessments for learning are ongoing throughout daily teaching and learning and help children and teachers determine what children already know to plan the next stages of learning.
Assessments of learning give students opportunities to demonstrate what they have learned.
What opportunities are there for you to learn more about your child’s learning?
Conferences
Parents are invited to a Parent/Teacher/Student conference twice a year. At each conference, parents can make appointments to speak with all of the child's subject teachers. The first, in November, is a significant opportunity to share initial progress, strengths, goals and action plans. The second conference is held in April.
Parents can access a broad picture of what their child is learning through ManageBac, our online learning management platform. ManageBac is the online platform used to develop our school’s curriculum. It is a system used for planning, assessing and reporting. We also use ManageBac for attendance and tracking student behaviour.
ManageBac allows each member of the ABA community to understand:
What is being taught (unit plans)
What learning is being asked for (assessment tasks)
When the assessment tasks are due (deadlines)
Summaries of performance (reports)
Parents should use ManageBac to:
Update their contact information (email, phone number, etc.).
Communicate with the school when their child will be absent (attendance feature).
Access the school’s curriculum.
Access their child’s report card.
Teachers are expected to use ManageBac for:
Curriculum planning - The repository for all units of work, developed in conjunction with the programme coordinator and team members.
An online forum for the posting of resources that support learning in the units.
The place to post assessment tasks and assessment tools in conjunction with the due date.
The place to complete report cards.
To track student attendance and behaviour.
Reports
You will receive four written reports throughout the year: one at the end of each semester (February and June), and one at each mid-semester point (November and April). These reports aim to give you a summary of your child's academic progress in the MYP.
Each report includes the following information:
The IB Learner Profile: This outlines the characteristics that guide all IB educational programmes, including the MYP.
Progress Summary of Achievement page: This section provides a comprehensive overview of your child's achievement levels (1-8). These levels are determined holistically based on various indicators, such as formally assessed work, class activities, homework completion, contributions in lessons, and teachers' observations. It also includes a description of the units covered in each MYP subject, as well as a summary of the MYP Approaches to Learning (AtL) skill clusters for each subject.
Class reports for each subject taken during the semester: These reports include a course description, the objectives used to assess work, and an achievement level for each assessment criterion. For Grades 9 & 10 Sciences, the achievement levels are based on a holistic analysis of the student's work in all three Sciences, as they share the same MYP objectives/criteria.
Progress continuum for MYP Approaches to Learning (AtL) skills: Each report includes a progress continuum for the AtL skills used in the subject so far.
General grade descriptors for each progress level in the MYP programme: This section clarifies the continuum levels used for the MYP Approaches to Learning (AtL) skills.
These reports are designed to help you understand your child's progress and support their academic growth.
Parent Workshops
The MYP's beliefs, values, and approaches may differ from the curriculum many of our families are accustomed to. That's why at ABA, we place a strong emphasis on communicating both the theory and practices of the MYP. Throughout the year, we organize parent workshops specifically designed for parents to attend and gain a deeper understanding of the MYP. These workshops provide excellent opportunities for parents to immerse themselves in the teaching and learning approaches we employ. Additionally, workshops foster connections among parents, providing a space for discussions and conversations about all aspects related to the MYP and ABA.
MYP Assessment
"All IB programmes are informed by assessment, as indicated in the IB approaches to teaching."
In the MYP, teachers assess student progress using clear criteria that are shared in advance and ensure fairness. They evaluate student work against these criteria across various tasks to provide a transparent view of achievement levels. Our school's internal assessments follow a collaborative "best-fit" approach, where teachers collectively establish standards for evaluating each student's progress comprehensively.
"MYP assessment aims to support and encourage student learning".
The goal of MYP assessment is to support and motivate student learning. We prioritize assessment methods that involve gathering and analyzing information about student performance, offering timely feedback to aid their development. Assessment in the MYP fosters the acquisition of ATL skills, particularly those aligned with subject objectives, by recognizing the importance of evaluating both the end results and the learning process itself.
