Charleston School is a non-denominational school located in Cove Bay, an area to the south of Aberdeen City. Opened in 1999, the school is situated in the private, residential area of Charleston and boasts a range of facilities.
Using an innovative design, the interior is open plan having been built with the modern curriculum in mind. The school has been built to a Y-shaped design with 2 teaching wings containing a total of 10 class areas. Each pair of classes shares a south-facing, bay windowed recess containing 2 sink units. This shared space between classrooms are called our ‘Pod Areas’. We also have 3 classrooms based in temporary accommodation at the rear of the main building.
The design throughout the school is light and airy. At present there are 12 classes catering for the needs of approximately 250 children from Primary 1 to Primary 7. A further 80 children can be accommodated in our purpose-built nursery.
A general purpose hall serves as a gym and dining hall, and can accommodate a stage for concerts and performances.
We are fortunate to have the benefits of a General-Purpose room. This is well equipped with music resources, cooking facilities and can be used as a break out space for classes to use flexibly.
We have a school library which children can access across the week. We benefit from Parent Helpers who allow this space to be well organised so children are able to enjoy a selection of fiction and nonfiction books. It is supported by Junior Librarians for children to check out books with independence.
This session we have introduced a new nurture space called ‘The Zen Den’. This environment allows pupils a space to develop life skills in a welcoming and calm break out environment for those that require it. It is well equipped with access to sensory materials, cooking facilities, comfortable seating and play equipment.
Our spacious playground features attractive areas of grass and shrubs and is completely enclosed with fencing at the front and rear. Thanks to our committed Parent Body and support from local businesses, we have been able to extend the opportunities available outside. Children have access to a ‘Buddy Sofa’, a new sensory garden and outdoor infant Pod play pod. We also provide a wide range of small equipment and loose materials to encourage constructive play within a secure environment.
