Course Overview
The course is made up of 3 units. Each unit will develop the knowledge and skills within the content detailed below.
Expressions and Functions
This unit builds on prior knowledge of Trigonometric Formulae, Functions and Vectors. The new content introduced is Exponential and Logarithmic Functions.
Relationships and Calculus
This unit builds on prior knowledge of Quadratic Equations and Trigonometric Equations. The new content introduced is Polynomials, Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus.
Applications
This unit builds on prior knowledge of the Straight Line and Applications of Calculus. The new content introduced is the Circle and Recurrence Relations.
In addition the course will develop learners’ ability to
select and apply skills in numeracy
use mathematical reasoning skills to extract and interpret information and to use complex mathematical models
use mathematical reasoning skills to think logically, provide justification or proof and solve problems
communicate mathematical information with complex features.
To support their learning candidates will be expected to complete day to day work and homework exercises which will average around 2 – 3 hours per week.

Assessment Methods
The course is externally assessed as follows:
Component 1: Question Paper 1 (Non Calculator), 70 marks, 1 hour and 30 minute exam
Component 2: Question Paper 2 (Calculator), 80 marks, 1 hour and 45 minute exam
Entry Requirements
Students would be expected to have achieved National 5 Mathematics at Grade A or B.
