Course Overview

The course is made up of 3 units. 

Each unit will develop the knowledge and skills within the content detailed below.

Methods in Algebra and Calculus

This unit builds on prior knowledge of Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus. The new content introduced is Partial Fractions and Differential Equations.

Applications of Algebra and Calculus

This unit builds on prior knowledge of Sequences and Series, Properties of Functions and Applications of Calculus. The new content introduced is The Binomial Theorem, The  Algebra of Complex Numbers and Sigma Notation and Mathematical Proof

Geometry, Proof and Systems of Equations

This unit builds on prior knowledge of Vectors  and The Geometry of Complex Numbers. The new content introduced is the Gaussian Elimination, Matrices and Processes of rigorous Proof

In addition the course will develop learners’ ability to


To support their learning students will be expected to complete day to day work and homework exercises which will average around 2 – 3 hours per week.

Assessment Methods

Component 1: Question Paper 1 (Non Calculator) 35 marks (1 hour)

Component 2: Question Paper 2 (Calculator) 80 marks (2 hours and 30 minutes)

Entry Requirements

Higher Mathematics at Grade A or B
