National 5

Course Overview

National 5 offers learners the opportunity to develop the skills of reading, writing, talking and listening in order to understand and to use language which is detailed in content. The course offers learners opportunities to develop and extend a wide range of skills. In particular, the course aims to:


Learners will be required to create detailed original texts in both written and spoken form.

Assessment Methods

National 5 courses are externally assessed by the SQA. Learners must pass an external exam (worth 70 marks) and complete a Portfolio-writing  (worth 30 marks). Learners must also attain the mandatory Spoken Language component which is assessed on achieved/not achieved basis.  National 5 courses are graded A-D.  

It is important to note that National 5 English may be taught concurrently with National 4 English. Learners will be presented for certification at the level most appropriate to them. National 4 courses are not graded.

Learning and Teaching Approaches

A range of learning and teaching approaches will be used including: teacher exposition; group work, discussion; individualised learning; self-evaluation and peer assessment.  Home learning may include the completion of class tasks; the revision of critical essay and set texts; critical essay and RUAE papers; preparation of talk and the re-drafting of written work.
