Course Overview
Higher English offers learners opportunities to develop listening, talking, reading and writing in order to understand and use language which is detailed and complex in nature. Building on literacy skills, learners develop understanding of the complexities of language, including through the study of a wide range of texts, and develop high levels of analytical thinking and understanding of the impact of language
The Course offers learners opportunities to develop and extend a wide range of skills. In particular, the Course aims to enable learners to develop the ability to:
listen, talk, read and write, in detailed and complex as appropriate to purpose and audience
understand, analyse and evaluate texts, including Scottish texts, as appropriate to purpose and audience in the contexts of literature, language and media
create and produce texts, as appropriate to purpose, audience and context through the application of knowledge and understanding of detailed and complex language
Learners will be required to create detailed and complex original texts in both written and spoken form. They will also produce a folio, complete the mandatory spoken language component and sit an external exam.

Component 1: Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation (Question Paper, 30 Marks, 1 Hour 30 Minutes)
Component 2: Critical Reading (Question Paper, 40 Marks, 1 Hour 30 Minutes)
Component 3: Portfolio–writing (Course Assessment, 30 Marks)
Component 4: Performance–spoken language (Graded as achieved/not achieved)
Entry Requirements
National 5 English at grade A or B
