National 4/National 5

Course Overview

This course encourages active learning in the process of developing an understanding of people and society in the past. Learners will acquire and apply relevant knowledge and learn to apply skills of investigating, analysing and evaluating sources in order to understand and explain important historical events and themes. 


By undertaking this Course, learners will develop a wide range of transferable skills, including: researching, evaluating a limited range of sources; developing an understanding of important historical themes and events; and presenting reasoned views leading to a balanced conclusion based on evidence. 


The course has three units:


Historical Study (Scottish): The Era of the Great War 1900-1928

In this Unit, learners will study the First World War.  Particular attention will be paid to the Scots on the Western Front and the effects of the war on Scotland.


Historical Study (British): Changing Britain 1760-1914

In this Unit, learners will study the effects of the Industrial Revolution, changes to health and housing, changes to transport and the growth of democracy. 

                                                                            

Historical Study (European and World): Hitler and Nazi Germany 1919-1939

In this Unit, learners will study Germany at the end of World War 1 through to the beginning of World War 2.  In particular, pupils will look at the reasons why Hitler came to power and how Hitler and the Nazi Party were able to maintain power up to 1939.

Assessment Methods

National 4
This course is internally assessed. To achieve a National 4 award in History, learners must pass all of the required units, including an Added Value Unit. National 4 courses are assessed on a pass/fail basis.

National 5
This course is externally assessed by the SQA. Learners must pass an external exam (worth 80%) and complete an Assignment (worth 20%). National 5 courses are graded A-D.

Learning and Teaching Approaches

A variety of learning and teaching strategies will be involved: Teacher led explanation and discussion; individual work; paired work; group work; debate; exploration of local history; researching and presenting information; interpretation and analysis of historical sources; self-evaluation and peer assessment.    

Homework
Pupils will have regular homework, some of which will involve research and investigation.
