French

National 4/National 5

Course Overview

The courses at National 4 and National 5 provide learners with opportunities to continue to acquire and develop the skills of listening, talking, reading and writing in French. Learners will develop the skills for understanding and using the language in meaningful contexts of society, learning, employability and culture.

Assessment Methods

At National 4 all units are internally assessed. They can be assessed on a unit by unit basis or as a combined assessment. National 4 assessments are on a pass/fail basis with no grade awarded. The Added Value Unit must be completed for a course award.

At National 5 pupils will sit an exam provided by the SQA which covers the skills of reading, writing and listening. In addition, there is a writing assignment completed in school and submitted to the SQA in March. Pupils also have to pass a talking performance in February / March, which is conducted by their class teacher and then moderated. National 5 courses are awarded grades A-D.
