In Support of Academic Freedom, Peaceful Protest
and Transparency
The Lewis & Clark College advocacy chapter of the American Association of University Professors has signed the AAUP statement “In Defense of the Right to Free Speech and Peaceful Protest on University Campuses.” We support the principles articulated in the statement and endorse their application on our campus.
To date, we have been reassured by the extent to which the L&C Administration has been committed to academic freedom and freedom of speech for students and all members of the College. In particular:
To date, we are encouraged by the College’s response to peaceful student activism.
We commend the extent to which faculty, as stewards of academic freedom, have been welcomed into communications between students and administration, and in interpretive deliberations around the scope of academic freedom on our campus.
We endorse the Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism as a framework that respects the values of academic freedom and recognizes instances of discrimination when they occur.
We support the full disclosure of the endowment investments specified in the demands of L&C student protesters. As an advocacy chapter, we will explore further ways to increase transparency of the College’s endowment finances. We are committed to ensuring that College investments represent the values of our academic community.
