This page is intended to give a snapshot of the efforts, projects, programs, and opportunities in place-based learning around Alaska. Here, teachers, administrators, principals, superintentends, board members, and anyone else with an interest in place-based learning can explore efforts and find resources for implementing place-based learning in their own classrooms. Place-based learning looks at strengths of a community and brings them into the classroom (or often brings the classroom out to the community). Cultural practices, history, ecology, language, and local livelihood activities inform lessons so students learn by making connections to their community and everyday life.
PBL Map - You can click on the pins below to see some of the place-based learning objectives going on throughout the state. Where videos are included, you can click on the picture at the top of the description to play the clip. If you know of a project, program, or activity that gets students involved in their local language, ecology, history, and culture that should be included, feel free to send a message to Tyler Breen at tbreen@aasb.org.
In this video series, Heather Lgeik'i Powell gives us some of her insight into linking education to place. Her enthusiasm and experience as a Łingít Lanugage and Culture teacher in the Hoonah City School District shows just how much she centers her student's cultural, social, and emotional wellbeing, as well as their academic growth. For some amazing examples and insight, watch below!
