Fall 2018 – First (Virtual) EG-RCN Meeting

Date: September 12, 2018 from 3:00 - 4:15 PM EST | 12:00 - 1:15 PM PDT

Meeting Objectives:

      1. Introduce all members to each other,
      2. Introduce and discuss the objectives of this proposal, the EG-RCN and of AAG’s Encoding Geography Initiative
      3. Discuss how to measure and map the current capacity for geo-computational thinking at the college level in the U.S.,
      4. Discuss how to identify diversity challenges associated with such curriculum,
      5. Share and confirm the schedule of activities that will take place between July 2018 and June 2019.

February 2018 – Second EG-RCN Meeting

Winter 2018 – Develop assessment for current capacity of geo-computational thinking

Based on the first meeting’s discussion the AAG will coordinate the design of an instrument to asses the existing capacity for teaching and learning geo-computational thinking at the college level. This instrument will be designed with the input of the EG-RCN members and findings will be used to map the current capacity for geo-computational thinking at the college level in the U.S.

Timeline:

      • November 30, 2018: Draft of survey instrument and do outreach at Regional Division Meetings
      • December, 2018: Disseminate instrument and objectives
      • January, 2018: Write assessment report
      • February, 2018: Share assessment report with EG-RCN members

Winter 2018-19 – Research Strategy Draft Report

The AAG will coordinate the development of the “Encoding Geography Transformative Research Strategy for the College Level” draft report that documents the research framework or strategy that was discussed among the EG-RCN and the geospatial community.

Spring 2019 – Third EG-RCN Meeting

Date: TBD, April 3-7

Location: Washington, DC (AAG Annual Meeting)

The EG-RCN will present survey findings and proposed strategy for the development of instructional materials on geo-computational thinking at the college level. After this meeting, the report will be further developed to incorporate input from attendees.

June 2019 – Research Strategy Final Report

The “Encoding Geography Transformative Research Strategy for the College Level” report will be finalized and disseminated.
