As spring begins, the weather is getting warmer and hiking is starting to seem more attractive to many people. The birds and critters are finally coming out, the trees are getting their leaves back, and the sun is brighter than in winter.
“I usually hike in the woods near the school, behind my house,” said senior Noah Heffley. Many people in the area live right next to the woods, so they can just walk outside and enjoy nature.
Heffley continued, “It’s relaxing walking through the woods while listening to music.”
Hiking is not only relaxing, but is great for your mental and physical health. Walking long distances builds a strong heart and healthy lungs, lowering the chances of respiratory problems.
The mental benefits of hiking include lowering anxiety and increasing mental focus. It also lowers the risk of depression for people that hike regularly.
The current time of year is much better than winter for hiking, but for some people, it’s still too cold and wet. Senior Patrick Power doesn’t like the current spring weather because of how muddy it gets. “I like the temperature to be in the 70’s, with slight clouds.”
The location that you hike at is also important. Different areas will have differing levels of wind and shade. They will also have different types of ground to walk on, being flat or bumpy.
“At Foster's lake, you can walk around and also go fishing,” said Power. “That’s why I bring my fishing gear.”
For people who prefer to walk on well established trails, there are many options throughout the area. Alfred University is home to the Pine Hill Trail, which the college maintains. At the Bully Hill State Forest near Almond, there are several trails available to hike on.

Music has always been a staple of life for humans. It can feel like communication on the deepest level, it helps us share who we are.
This year has had quite a few notable releases from famous artists like Taylor Swift and Beyonce. These songs have made their way to the billboard top 100 hot songs out now. These songs come from quite a few different genres, some are hip hop and some are pop.
The songs we will look at will be the top 10 of this list. These songs are supposed to be the most listened to this week.
Through polling students of a few different grade levels we can see what songs are being listened to by students around our school specifically.
Out of 30 students this was the result. Each student was asked what songs they had heard out of this list of four. Carnival by Kanye West seems to take the cake when it comes to most well known, likely due to its popularity on social media platforms like Tik Tok. Most of, if not all of, these songs are explicit which may lead to the low amount of grade 9 students listening.
This year has had quite a few notable songs, namely among them Utopia or For the Dogs by Travis Scott and Drake respectively. This coming year promises even more releases, hopefully these ones are more eye catching to students.
