Women continue to have a huge role in the progression of science in our society. Without women in the field of science, many discoveries would not have been made when they were. 

The UN Women and Girls in Science Day is a day to recognize figures in history and current women in science and their contributions. The assembly takes place every year to celebrate and promote access and participation of women in science. This year the event took place at the United Nations Headquarters located in New York City over the course of two days, February 8 and 9. 

In celebration of this day two science teachers, Ms. Katherine Carretto and Mrs. Julieanne Gaias, spoke about the impact women have had on science. 

Ms. Carretto teaches biological sciences and her favorite field within biology is genetics. She claimed that science is different from other subjects because it “changes and evolves. With each change we learn new information to help know better and do better.”

A scientist who Ms. Carretto admires is Rosalind Franklin. She was involved in discovering DNA. This discovery and understanding the structure of DNA opened doors to so many possibilities, not just in the world of science but in the medical world as well. Without her the technology and advancements in the medical world would not be where they are today. 

At the end of the interview, Ms. Carretto shared her hopes and dreams for the future of women in science. “I hope that in the future when a teacher is interviewed they rally off 25 female scientists.” 

Mrs. Gaias teaches a completely different field of science, earth science and environmental science. She is fascinated by the field of geology. One of her favorite parts of learning and teaching science is how she can understand the ancient world and what the earth was like billions of years ago. 

Mrs. Gaias admires many scientists but the one she looks up to the most is Marie Tharp. Marie Tharp was an American geologist and oceanographic cartographer. She partnered with geologist Bruce Heezen creating the first scientific map of the Atlantic Ocean floor. This discovery led to the acceptance of the theory of plate tectonics and much more. 

Mrs. Gaias hopes that “more women pursue the field of science.”

Both Ms. Carretto and Mrs. Gaias hopes for a bright future in science where more women pursue a career in the field.

On February 4 the 2024 Grammys occurred and after they finished there were many upset fans of artists along with an arrest that happened. Although there were many controversial awards to artists who fans thought didn’t deserve them, the most surprising one of the night was Killer Mike’s awards. 

Killer Mike is an American Rapper who has been an active artist since 1995. Some of his top songs are R.A.P Music, Reagan, Big Beast, and his newest Grammy winning song Scientists and Engineers. 

In the Grammys this year there were four rap albums nominated being, Utopia by Travis Scott, Her Loss by Drake and 21 Savage, King’s Disease III by Nas, and the winner Michael by Killer Mike. This was Mike’s first grammy since 2003, over two decades ago. Out of these the most anticipated and likely to win was Utopia by Travis Scott with 64 percent of the audience voting him to win, while Killer Mike was the least anticipated with less than 5 percent voting him to win. Senior Kanye Cumberbatch said “I don’t know any of his songs, I’ve never even heard of him.” 

Aside from the controversy about Killer Mike winning the Grammy he then got arrested at the show. He was seen in handcuffs being escorted from the Grammys by LAPD. The cause for his arrest was misdemeanor battery due to an altercation with an “overzealous” security guard as Mike said. “I thought it was really weird that he got arrested during the grammys but a fight is a fight,” Cumberbatch said.

The Grammys were overall not satisfactory for most fans. Fans feel that artists were “robbed” of their awards, however this is a common pattern with award events like this.

Between fashion month, awards season, the Grammys, and the cast of Dune: Part Two pushing out amazing looks, there has been a lot to see. Celebrities of course love to go all out and display their favorite styles and outfits in the spotlight. Many of them succeed with their outfits and get to be placed among the best dressed celebrities.

The best dressed celebrities tend to grab attention a little more than the worst dressed. The Grammys had some stars that really decked out their outfits with some impressive clothes. Some notable outfits were Taylor Swift in Schiaparelli, Billie Eilish in Chrome Hearts, and Miley Cyrus in Maison Margiela. These three celebrities are considered some of the better dressed and always like to stand out with Miley Cyrus often wearing a shocking outfit and Billie Eilish wearing more casual designer clothes that make her stand out.

Senior Jack Deutsch had some opinions on Taylor Swift’s dress at the Grammys “It's terrible because of the person, I just don’t like Taylor Swift.” Showing that some people may dislike outfits because of their opinion on celebrities. Deutsch saw all three outfits, “I think Miley Cyrus’s outfit is the best because I didn’t really like Billie Eilish’s outfit and I refuse to pick Taylor Swift.” 

After the Grammys the global fashion weeks started. Throughout February there were the New York, London, Milan, and Paris fashion weeks. Many celebrities dressed up to show out for the events. Florence Pugh wore a custom Valentino, Emma Stone wore Louis Vuitton, and Milly Bobby Brown was also wearing Louis Vuitton. These were just some of the highly rated outfits at the fashion weeks.

Dune: Part Two’s premier had many amazing and interesting outfits. The big showstopper of the night was Zendaya’s see-through suit of armor. This cyborg-esque outfit was styled by her celebrity stylist Law Roach. The outfit was shocking due to the metallic armor look but also the clear skin exposing areas.

Throughout February women took all the attention from fashion media with their show stopping outfits. There were many amazing styles that were somehow packed into the shortest month of the year.

Global Fashion Week 2024 unfolded with a dazzling display of creativity and heightened commitment. From Paris to New York,from Milan, to Tokyo the fashion capitals of the world came together to showcase the industry's evolution towards a more inclusive future. 

Designers across the globe embraced sustainability as a central theme, using eco-friendly fabrics and ethically produced clothing in their collection.The runways were decorated with garments made from recycled material, which emphasized the industry's growing awareness of environmental impact. In addition designers prioritized diversity in their models, celebrating a broad spectrum of body types, ethnicities, and genders. The runway became a place for promoting authenticity, breaking away from traditional beauty standards.  Senior Owen Lawrence stated, “I never knew much about Global Fashion week until this year, I think it is amazing how much they are promoting climate change and how to use reusable resources.” 

Global Fashion Week also witnessed the rise of fashion activism. Designers used platforms like social media and websites all over the internet to address pressing social and political issues, they made bold statements on climate change, gender equality, and human rights. 

In conclusion, Global Fashion Week 2024 was a celebration of fashion’s evolution toward a more inclusive and technologically advanced future. As the industry continues to improve, it makes the way for a transformative era that goes beyond just style and glam. It reflects the value of an inspiring global community.

The Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is one of the most important festivals in traditional Chinese culture. During the Spring Festival, people put aside their busy work and enjoy this annual family reunion moment. The customs of the Spring Festival are rich and colorful, the most common of which are: paying New Year greetings, eating New Year's Eve dinner, posting Spring Festival couplets, setting off firecrackers, and dragon and lion dances.”I like all the good cultural foods during Chinese New Year, like dumplings and fish. They all have promising meaning and taste great!” expressed senior Candy Zhou.

As the Spring Festival approaches, even the air is filled with the flavor of the New Year. Everyone is happy, and there is an endless stream of people going shopping to prepare New Years goods. We will hang red lanterns at the door of our homes, and every household will be decorated with lanterns. 

On New Year's Eve, some relatives and friends gather together and taste delicious food. This is the New Year's Eve dinner. There are sounds of firecrackers and fireworks everywhere, as every blessing is sent to thousands of households. All kinds of fireworks make the sky colorful. Some people in the house are busy setting off firecrackers, and some people are busy playing mahjong. 

Some people watch the Spring Festival Gala. The next morning, people will get up early, put on new clothes and put Spring Festival couplets on their doors to welcome the new year. Then they will carry gifts and fruits, visit relatives and friends door to door, and send New Year blessings to the elders. Children are given a lot of red envelopes, which contain lucky money, which means they can suppress evil spirits, and with the lucky money, they can spend their one year in peace.
