The Signature Program and Science National Honors Society collaborate on this event to bring in professional women in STEM careers. These women come to Southern High School and present about their profession, company, career path, and opportunities for high school students in the STEM field. This event is in March for Women's History Month.
Local organizations come to Southern High School to inspire the Junior class about service through a hands-on workshop. Every Junior gets to experience at least three different groups during this exciting event!
Past participating organizations include:
AA County Fairgrounds
Kits to Heart
SPCA
AA County Food Bank
Walk the Walk Foundation
AACPL
Smithsonian Environmental Research Center
Captain Avery Museum
Blankets of Hope
Nest 4 Us
Joy Thrift
All Southern High School students will experience at least 2 mock interviews during their Junior year. A mock interview is a simulation of an actual job interview used to help train and prepare our students to enter the workforce, apply for scholarships, and apply for some colleges. We ask members of our community to volunteer for 70 minute time frames over a week of dates in June. The 22-23 dates are June 5th-9th.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Katie Limbacher at KLimbacher@aacps.org.

We feel that the best teaching practices happen when teachers have a true understanding of their students and their community. Every 3-5 years, we take teachers on a guided tour of South County highlighting geographical barriers for some of our students and discuss strategies to help students overcome obstacles and achieve academic success.
Local businesses come to Southern and display opportunities and information about their company. Some will have applications for high school students at the event, others are there to provide information for students to consider in the future.

This is an annual contest where students create and give a speech about how to make the world a better place. Students practice the virtues of critical thinking and ethical decision making while developing public speaking and leadership skills. Pictured are our finalists from 2022, Megan Arnold and Lauren Brown.
More information about the contest can be found by clicking here.
