What to do when you come to an unknown word:

• Look at the picture. What is in the picture that starts with the beginning letter?

• Say the first sound in the word.

• Slowly stretch each sound to make the word. ex.- sh iii p

• Break the word into chunks you know. ex.- m at fl at

• Flip the vowel sound. Try the long and short vowel.

• Re-read the sentence. Does it make sense?

• Skip the tricky word. Read the whole sentence. Can you figure out the word?
