Naples is in southern Italy. Naples is near Mt. Vesuvius the mountain that wiped out Pompeii. Naples was founded by Greeks in southern Italy, which was later conquered by Romans. However during the Roman Civil War, Naples was ruled by a man named Sulla. His army occupied Naples and massacred most of the people. Luckily Naples soon returned to its natural state and flourished once again.During the 5th century the Roman Empire split in two, and then the western half of the Roman Empire was left in the hands of Germanic people*. But the eastern half of the Roman Empire known as the Byzantine Empire was determined to recapture southern Italy. In 536 AD they captured Naples. Byzantine Empire slowly lost power. Then in 645 AD a man named Basilio became duke* of Naples. Soon after Naples thrived and trade with other places around the Mediterranean flourished as well.
