But the eastern half of the Roman Empire known as the Byzantine Empire was determined to recapture southern Italy. In 536 AD they captured Naples. Byzantine Empire slowly lost power. Then in 645 AD a man named Basilio became duke* of Naples. Soon after Naples thrived and trade with other places around the Mediterranean flourished as well.
