On Thursday February 26th during 1st, 2nd, 4th period, and a special Afterschool showing for friends and family, North County's Black Student Union (BSU) and African Student Association (ASA) held the second annual Afroblast in honor of Black History Month. The show was run by the presidents of both the clubs, Nana E. and Eliana W., with the help of Ms. Patterson, Mr. Buabeng, and Ms. Amadi. The show consisted of a few different segments such as the ASA x BSU dance team performances, an educational segment, two different modeling sections, African Royalty and Black love model interviews, and our ASA vs BSU lip sync battles.
With the dances, the girls showed off talent and ability with their dance moves from different cultures and eras of the world. With there being 2 dances, the second starring some of the guys in both of the clubs, and the amazing dance moves from the girls in both pieces, there were surprises all throughout the dance segment of the showcase.
The education segment followed after and that was led by Joseph L. and Teni O.. They explained why we were really here to celebrate Black history month. We were informed of some very prevalent black leaders within history such as Mansa Musa, Madam C.J. Walker, Shirly Chisholm, Moses Fleetwood, Queen Yaa Asantewaa, and Thomas Sankara. They showed us that Afroblast wasn't just about getting out of class, it was about honoring the history of the people who paved the way for minorities across the country and the globe.
Moving onto the Modeling segment, ASA and BSU came up with the 2 wonderful themes of African Royalty and Black Love. First up was African Royalty and boy did they show off! Every last one of the models graced the stage to Fashion Killa by Ayra Starr with their stunning outfits; each outfit stood out one by one.
Next up was black love, each model made their way down the stage solo to Love galore by SZA, showing off their outfits. Every outfit shows a bit of the model’s personality and creativity. After everyone got back to the stage, they showed off with their partners, giving a whole new meaning to their looks.
Not every show was the same either. During second period, we had Mr. Sam on the stage modeling for African Royalty, Mr. Buabeng also modeled for the same theme, and a North County alumni, Barbra, came back just for the occasion to model in both themes!
Lastly, we had the lip sync battles between President Nana and Vice President Tomiwa of ASA to Over by R2Bees. They had a heartbreaking story playing through their performance with their male partners begging for their forgiveness. Vice President Fatima of BSU brought out Nikky and Seynabou with her to perform to Who Dat Girl by ASrya Starr & Rema for a fierce and bold performance because they are all “dat girl”.
As someone who is a member in both of these clubs and a part of this show, we are so glad that it turned out this well and look forward to continuing this tradition for the Knights!

The North County HS Spring Blood Drive took place on February 25th, 2026 in the old gym. In January 2026, the American Red Cross declared a severe national blood shortage following a 35% drop in inventory over one month, driven by widespread flu and extreme weather. The crisis prompted urgent calls for donations of all types, particularly platelets and type O blood, to support patients, trauma victims, and cancer patients.
Due to the crisis, the American Red Cross urged businesses, schools, and communities to donate for those in need. “This time of year is always challenging for blood collection — but right now, the perfect storm of a long holiday season, record flu activity and winter weather are all impeding donation efforts,” said Dr. Courtney Lawrence, executive medical director for the Red Cross. “Every person’s blood donation can help save lives — plus you help ease the tremendous burden on our doctors and nurses, allowing them to focus on caring for patients.” Intense winter weather and freezing temperatures are expected across much of the country in the upcoming weeks, which will potentially delay or cancel blood drives and force vital units of blood to be uncollected. Last month alone, about 400 blood drives were impacted due to extreme winter weather — this is more than three times the number of those affected during the same time the previous year. As a result, thousands of blood donations went uncollected.
This year, I participated in our school’s blood drive. Before the blood drive you had to fill out a form via QR code, and if you are 16 and under you had to fill out a parental consent form. Once you arrived in the old gym, you would sign in and show the people your ID or student ID. After signing in you’d be directed to sit in an area of chairs before being called over to a small table. The table had a “box wall” over 2 of the sides for confidentiality. While at the table a Red Cross worker would ask your name, DOB, and for your (student) ID. Then they’d take your blood pressure and hemoglobin count.
After that, they’d ask you a series of questions, and then step away while you filled out a questionnaire. It’s very important to be honest in the questionnaire; if you have the cold/flu, HIV/AIDs, hepatitis B or C, have had recent tattoo’s, traveled to areas with Malaria, have a history of certain cancers or have done IV drug use you could be disqualified from donating your blood. You also must be in good health, be 16-17 years old and weigh at least 110 lbs. After you’re finished with the questions, you’ll be led over to an area with multiple cots to sit on. They’ll ask if you have a preferred arm to draw from or not, give you a juice to drink, and find a vein after you’ve drank the juice; a tourniquet will be tied above your elbow and they’ll hand you something to squeeze before inserting the needle into your vein. If you’re wearing long-sleeves, make sure they can be pulled above your elbow.
During the donating process, you can chat with other donors, read, or be on your phone. You’ll have to sit in that spot, occasionally squeezing the object until you fill up the bag of blood. The amount of time it takes to fill the bag of blood can vary per-person; I believe mine took around 5-6 minutes. After you fill the bag, they’ll pinch the line and fill up 5 more vials with your blood. After the blood-drawing process they put a cloth on the spot, put a bandage on it and tie red tape around it. Then you’re sent to a table with water and snacks for 15 minutes to monitor you in case of fainting or dizziness happening.
Absolutely make sure to eat something before getting your blood drawn. You have to wait about 2-4 hours before taking off the wrap/bandage, and make sure to clean the area with soap and water to prevent rashes. Make sure to drink water for the next 24-48 hours, avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for the rest of the day and do not consume alcohol. If bleeding occurs: Apply pressure to the site and raise your arm straight up for 5-10 minutes. If you become dizzy, sit down immediately with your feet elevated until it passes. And if you are driving, you should pull over until it passes.

If you love God, then why do you hate his creations? In 2003, the department of homeland security joined together with 22 other federal agencies including Immigration and Naturalization Service and the U.S. Customs Service in response to the September 11 attack and national security concerns. Together, they decided to divide into 3 new agencies: the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection, the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services, and finally, the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They have done a lot for this country and took care of criminals that came into the United States with malicious intent, but what about the working man, the mother worried about her children’s education, and the kids who can no longer call their country home?
Under the Trump administration, the United States has doubled down on deportation and now more than ever, there's been a spike in immigrant detainees. However, only 30% of those detainees have a criminal record, yet they’re still viewed as “aliens” by a part of this nation. Everyone who migrated to America recognizes that it was due to their need for a better life, and to be realistic a lot of what America is built on today is because of immigrants. So why make the process of becoming a U.S. citizen so difficult?
Imagine barely moving here from your country that's in a horrible state, having to find work at minimum wage or blue collar (only places that may hire you), then spending the next 6-10+ years trying to become a citizen while raising a family; now add racism and a federal agency that’s constantly trying to find people like you on the off chance that you have a criminal record. Racism and discrimination didn’t end when schools were desegregated, it's still ongoing in our ignorant communities. A majority of discrimination is traced back to a negative experience with one individual of that race, but if you’re going to say that someone is different, then you should also recognize they are different from everyone else in their race. In school you always hear “we’re all the same on the inside,” but the only things that everyone in this world have in common is that we have a spectrum of emotions, free will, and death.
By human nature we all seek love and acceptance even in our earliest moments, yet only the privileged will see that in their early life. It’s your choice to spread that hate after a certain age because you are no longer a product of how you grew up. At North county, 30 percent of roughly 2,000 students are hispanic, these are your classmates with their futures ahead of them. This issue won't go away overnight, but become aware and see how you can help out.

Wilting Flowers
Poem by Sara Argueta
We were all blooming once,
Soft petals open to the sun,
Trusting the world to be kind,
but even the brighteset flowers wilt.
When the seasons change to quickly,
When the things they leaned on disappear.
Still there's beauty in the fading--
in the way we learn to let go,
in the quiet strength of starting again...

History of the Plunge
The Plunge has been a part of Maryland's history beginning a total of 30 years ago. The first Plunge involved thousands of plungers jumping into the icy Chesapeake Bay in support of the Special Olympics Maryland just like the plunge today.
History of School Involvement
The first plunge known as the “Cool Schools Plunge” took place in 2011 in which $239,000 was raised; years after, students and teachers have raised over $4 million dollars. In 2025, plungers raised a record-setting $968,439 following six Plunge hours over two days.
Student Interviews
To get a take on another student’s opinion from North County High School, I decided to interview my best friend Ameena Alam who attended the polar bear plunge with me.
Question 1:
Interviewer (Kirstin): What made you want to sign up for the polar bear plunge?
Ameena: “I wanted to support the special olympics.”
Question 2:
Interviewer (Kirstin): “How would you rate your experience at the plunge?”
Ameena: “9/10, it was a fun day of food trucks, music, and seeing many people from all different high schools coming together to support, as well as a long day that was like a field trip.”
Question 3:
Interviewer (Kirstin): Would you recommend the plunge to others?
Ameen : “Yes, because while it was cold it was still a fun day and while you’re missing school I still recommend it because you’re missing for a good reason.”
If you didn’t get to plunge this past year, there’s always next year! If you’ve never thought about plunging before, maybe this article will change your mind because I recommend you at least experience the Polar Bear Plunge at least once in your life. Additionally, North County High School raised a total of $63,419 dollars in support of the special olympics.

Romantic comedies, or romcoms, have a way of turning love into unforgettable moments. In 10 Things I Hate About You, Patrick sings on the school bleachers to win Kat over, and in The Notebook, a kiss in the rain becomes one of the most iconic romantic scenes in film. Movies like 13 Going on 30 show love as something that was meant to be all along, while Pretty Woman and The Proposal build relationships through unexpected situations that quickly turn into romance. Even in 27 Dresses (my favorite honestly), the story centers on the idea that someone might finally notice the person who’s been there all along. These scenes are memorable because they highlight big emotions, bold gestures, and the exciting “movie moments” that make romcoms so fun to watch.
In real life, romance often looks a little different, but that doesn’t make it any less meaningful. Instead of dramatic rain kisses or surprise musical performances, real relationships are usually built through smaller, everyday actions - checking in on someone, supporting each other, or sharing simple moments together. The excitement of romcoms can still feel relatable because many of their themes - friendship turning to love, unexpected connections, or realizing how much someone means to you - do happen in real life. The difference is that these moments are usually quieter and happen over time. Romcoms may exaggerate romance for the screen, but they also capture the hopeful idea that meaningful connections can grow in surprising ways.

Books, especially those of the romance genre, always contain some perfect romance with the perfect guy and girl and the perfect meet-cute; and although it’s sometimes messy, the story will typically end happily ever after. Yes, some books will end painfully and maybe not so happily, but they still contain a glimpse of that perfect romance story we as human beings strive to achieve. With happy endings and perfect romance, or painful stories resulting in agony, there’s a perfect book for everyone to transport us away from our reality into a fictional world. If you’re looking for your next perfect romantic read, take a look at these books!
The Do-Over
By Lynn Painter
Imagine living through the worst possible case scenario of Valentine’s Day ever; you get your heart broken in so many ways that you just want to go to sleep at your grandmother’s house in order to escape it all. Well that’s how the main character, Emily Hornby’s, Valentine’s Day went, and afterwards, instead of waking up on February 15th, she woke up once again on Valentine’s Day and had to live it all again and again. Lynn Painter created a wonderful romantic spinoff inspired by the concept of the movie GroundHog Day. Through a slow burn, day of no consequences, and a love story with the seemingly unlikely bad boy, and Lynn Painter’s appealing writing, this page-turner kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
The Cheat Sheet
By Sarah Adams
I’ll admit, I’m a little biased with this one because the main character is also a dancer. Nonetheless, this book had me giggling and kicking my feet the whole time. Bree Camden is secretly in love with her best friend and NFL star, Nathan Donelson. Through a drunken confession, a publicity stunt, and a mission to save Bree’s struggling dance studio, a perfect love story unfolds. It’s a slow burn, but in the end it’s all worth it in this fake-dating, friends-to-lovers story. Between the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day, it’s a perfect read for this time of year. This cheesy but absolutely adorable rom-com stole my heart and I’m sure it will steal yours too!

President’s day is a widely forgotten holiday in American culture today; it is the official day celebrating Abraham Lincoln’s and George Washington’s birthday, celebrated on February 16th. It is considered a national holiday, with a day off from most government jobs and schools closed on this day as well. This year, it resulted in a much anticipated three-day weekend for students.
While most students spend their extra day off school relaxing, spending time with family or friends, or working, either in their communities or at their jobs, there are some other ways President’s Day is celebrated across the country. Some avid patriots enjoy re-enactments, either watching them, or acting them, for retail, it is a major discounting weekend, to promote shoppers, and finally, museums and educational centers offer free and special tours to families! While Presidents Day is not one of the most popular holidays of all time, it gives Americans a way to show their love for America.
Olivia Dean at the 2026 Grammy Awards

The Grammy Awards are a huge event where many song writers, singers, and music artists in general, come together to win various awards.
Olivia Dean, an amazing singer if I may say so myself, won the award for “Best New Artist.” Her most played song is titled, “Man I Need” with 600 Million streams.
“Hard Fought Hallelujah,” by Brandon Lake Ft. Jelly Roll, won the, “Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song” award; I absolutely adore this song, my little brother sings it loud and proud every time he hears it play. While Brandon Lake was winning this award, in his speech he stated that many people have talked abotu how much this song has saved them. When they felt in the depths they realized the battle is not yet over and there is still a fight to be done.
Billie Eilish and FINNEAS won the “Song of the Year” award with an insane amount of plays at 1.9 billion.
These were my top 3 favorite awards during this year's 2026 Grammys!
