The Student Experience

Clubs

Eco Action: Our most dynamic group of students who always have multiple, impressive projects running at once.  Camping, hiking, planting, kayaking, mapping, teaching - if it's outdoors, they do it. Sponsored by Mr. Bem and Ms. Bourgeois, meets Tuesday Maroon Block.

Envirothon: A team of dedicated students that compete against other schools at Arlington Echo to display their environmental skills, like how to identify trees by their leaves or determine the health of a stream. Field trips are common, no knowledge or skills necessary to join! Sponsored by Mr. Bem, meets Monday Gray Block.

Gardening Club: Ms. Allison Davis shows students how to work wonders with their plants! Meets Fridays during grey block.

Recycling Program

Student athletes perform the recycling at Broadneck every day, Tuesday-Friday.  Every week, athletes from a team that is in-season come in to school an hour early to empty all of the recycling bins in the school.  This program-wide service project is a great way for athletes to show their Bruin pride and give back to the school and our environment.

Signature Outdoor Classroom

The Signature Outdoor Classroom opened in April, 2022.  It is a space for teachers to lead their regular, academic classes in an open green space.

The SOC also serves our school community by hosting special events and guest speakers.

The main feature of the SOC is the sidewalk mural, created by Art Honors Society students during the 2021-22 school year.

Field Experiences

Real-world, authentic experiences are the basis of any Signature Program.  We are so fortunate to have a wealth of educational resources in our area, and the incredible folks at those organizations are eager to teach our students how to be environmentally literate, and to have a good time.  Through our field experiences, students not only learn, they usually get their hands dirty and do some good work while their at it.  We're always looking to give our students new, unique experiences, to remember and inspire.

Guest Speakers

From farmers to lawyers, engineers, politicians, writers, carpenters, doctors, accountants, welders, chefs, and even military - it's not just environmental scientists who work hard to protect and preserve.  We draw on our elaborate community network to bring in the experts in nearly every industry, to share their first hand experiences and help our students envision their futures.

Service Projects

Whether it be through our clubs, classes, a share from a community partner, or the AACPS Service Learning Portal, our students do a world of good helping their neighbors and Mother Earth.  From advocacy to action and everywhere in between, we consistently have service projects running for students of all interests and skill sets.  Join a club, take a class, check out the Signature bulletin board, or reach out to do some work you can feel really good about.
