NEW: Ukraine Information

Overview

Action for Healthy Communities is a not-for-profit settlement organization. We are funded by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada to provide services to immigrants and refugees on behalf of the Government of Canada.

These services vary depending on need, but broadly include:

  • Information and referrals, for example to healthcare providers, financial services, or supported housing;

  • Language training, helping newcomer children and adults to improve their English;

  • Assistance finding employment that matches newcomers’ skills;

  • Supporting newcomer children and youth with their education; and

  • Help integrating into Canadian society, through cultural activities, information sessions, and fun activities for families to participate in.

  • Supporting families in learning healthy coping skills, emotional resiliency, and the skills they need to succeed in Canada.

The cornerstone of our work with schools is our Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program. We work with children and youth in the K-12 school system with educational supports (including language supports), literacy and foundational learning, explaining the Canadian school system, graduation assistance, and translation/interpretation in their mother language.

There is no cost associated with any of our services, either to clients or supporting institutions like schools, libraries, or adult learning councils. We are a secular organization that welcomes people from all religions. As a government-funded settlement organization, we do not receive financial incentives for client recruitment.

Supporting Immigrants
Arriving in Canada

Every year, Canada welcomes more than 250,000 new immigrants from all over the world. Approximately 35,000 of these new immigrants come to Alberta each year, and while most will choose to live in our province's largest cities (Edmonton and Calgary), many more also choose to live in smaller communities.

Coming to a new country is a challenge for anyone, particularly people who do not yet speak the local language. For those who choose to live in rural Alberta, the culture shock is even greater. This cultural adjustment can be very isolating and frightening, and may limit the family's success in adjusting to life in Canada.

Simply put, our work is to be there, supporting newcomers with any challenge they encounter as they become part of their new community here in Canada.

Action for Healthy Communities supports newcomers by filling in the gaps:

  • Connecting newcomers with essential services

  • Supporting newcomers to learn about Canada and find employment

  • Offering free and flexible opportunities to practice English

  • Answering questions about Canadian systems

Action for Healthy Communities has been working in Greater Edmonton since 1995.

In Fall 2020, Action for Healthy Communities established our Rural Small Centres program, to support newcomers in Central and Eastern Alberta.

Currently, we operate in:

  • Cold Lake

  • Bonnyville

  • Leduc

  • Beaumont

  • Camrose
