Action for Healthy Communities offers the following services, available to our newcomer clients and the school staff supporting them:
Translation: By request, we can translate documents needed to effectively communicate with families, like a permission slip or a loan agreement for a school laptop. We can also help families secure translation required for legal or immigration matters, like birth certificates, diplomas, and degrees.
Interpretation: With a minimum of 72 hours notice, we can secure an interpreter in any language to help school staff communicate with families. For example, we can secure interpreter support for a parent-teacher conference.
Conversation Clubs/English Support: We offer in-person and online "conversation clubs," where children, teenagers, and adults can practice speaking English in a comfortable, friendly environment.
Individual Tutoring and Homework Help: We offer in-person and online academic support tailored specifically to newcomer students. We can help students struggling with English specifically, or students whose level of English is causing them to struggle with other subjects.
Anti-Racism/Diversity and Inclusion for Students: In spring 2021, we provided 14 anti-racism sessions to students aged 11 to 17 in schools. Action for Healthy Communities is proud to support anti-racist education, and can offer our programming online to any classroom by request.
Capacity Building: Our small but dedicated team works closely with families, so they can build trust and comfort with our organization as we help them navigate systems in Canada (government, healthcare, employment, etc.) We connect clients with other agencies when they need them. We also advocate for our clients, and help them advocate for themselves.
Empowerment for Youth: We offer programming designed to support newcomer children and youth to improve their self-esteem and encourage them to be a part of their new community.
Emotional Well-Being and Coping Strategies: Previously, Action for Healthy Communities has offered mental health training for young people, including Suicide Awareness and Community Support training. Beyond structured programming, we help families adjust to Canada, reduce social isolation, and support healthy coping strategies in a culturally sensitive way.
Activities for Children and Youth: Children and youth can participate in our art club, sports clubs, and technology clubs. Like all of our services, sign up is completely free.
Basic Needs Supports: Our team is well-connected to different social supports in the community, and can help newcomer clients get access to food (including culturally appropriate food, like halal), housing, emergency supports, legal assistance, and immigration issues assistance.
Our office spaces throughout the province are family-focused and designed to support conversation and learning.
Action for Healthy Communities is paid for by the Government of Canada.
