About

Phi Theta Kappa, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, Peru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates, and U.S. territorial possessions, More than 3 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 134,000 students inducted annually.

The Sigma Omega chapter, chartered in 1968, recognizes WVU Parkersburg students who have achieved high academic honors.  Members are provided opportunities to develop in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship, the four hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa.

As a member of the Ohio Region, Sigma Omega is one of 47 chapters that collaborates on a regional level within Division 1.  The chapter also interacts with fellow Phi Theta Kappans on an international level through its attendance to the society's annual conference, Catalyst (formerly known as "Nerd Nation").

Membership is by invitation only to those current WVUP students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and have completed 12 credit hours of college work (or 6 college credit hours if only pursuing a CAS).   Membership must be accepted by the deadline for the Membership Period in which a current WVUP student is invited.  If it is not accepted by that membership period deadline, then the student will need to wait until the next membership period opens and only if they receive another invitation to join.

Membership can be accepted online thru the PTK Headquarters invitation using a credit card or by paying the required $100 membership fee (using a check or cash) and completing and submitting an application form to Marie Butler in Room 1332 of the main campus.  To contact Marie Butler, email her at mbutler1@wvup.edu

After membership is accepted by a current WVUP student, a member must maintain no less than a 3.25 cumulative GPA to remain a member in good standing.  One semester of probation is granted to members who do not meet that GPA.  If after the next semester, if the 3.25 cumulative GPA is not met, then the member will have their membership revoked.  Grades are checked at the end of each semester by the group's Lead Advisor.

Some things we do – we host an Adopt a Highway event 3 times during the year as a way to give back to our college.  We also host a college project and work scholastically toward our required PTK Honors in Action Conference.  We also travel to Ohio Regional Conferences.  There is made available scholarship opportunities to members that are not made available to other students who are not PTK members.  One of the most important things students find is it looks good on a future resume that you were a member of an academic honor society while in college.
