What are fine motor skills?

Fine motor skills involve the ability to efficiently use the small muscles of the hand and forearm to grasp and manipulate small items. The coordination of both small muscles in the hand and larger muscles in the forearm help to complete tasks such as using a pencil, using scissors, managing buttons, handling coins and using utensils for eating (Belsky, n.d.).
