The students will learn and be able to demonstrate:
- Correct singing posture (standing/sitting).
- Low diaphragmatic breathing with a lifted ribcage.
- Breath energy, support and management in their vocal tone.
- Resonance with high, forward placement in all registers of their voice.
- Matching pitch throughout designated piece or section of music.
- Singing the starting pitch of music/designated section after hearing a given chord, introduction or interlude.
- Correctly performing rhythms in designated piece or section of music.
- Maintaining established tempo of piece
- Ability to sing phrases with connection to the breath and demonstrate a sense of forward motion.
- Sing with word and/or syllabic stress in designated piece or section of music.
- Phrases with dynamic changes.
- Maintaining their own vocal part when singing in harmony .
- Ability to recognize out of tune singing and self correct as needed.
Chorus Literacy goals:
The students will learn then read, perform, notate or create:
- Stepwise pitch patterns (whole/half steps) within a major scale.
- Pitch patterns that integrate step and skip patterns.
- Their own vocal part on a 2-part score.
- Their own vocal part in a 2-part score while the second part is being sung.
- Rhythm patterns using eighth, quarter, half, dotted half, and whole notes and rests.
- Rhythm patterns in groups of 2, 3, and 4 beats.
- Rhythm patterns using dotted quarter notes, sixteenth notes, short syncopated rhythm patterns and dotted eighth-sixteenth patterns.
- Sings vocal examples of basic dynamic levels (piano, forte, crescendo and diminuendo).
Chorus Theory Curriculum:
- The students learn and can identifies and notate the following musical signs:
- Treble clef, bass clef, staff, barline, double bar and time signature.
- Staccato and legato articulations.
- Extended dynamic levels (mezzo piano, mezzo forte, pianissimo, fortissimo).
- Letter names of the lines and spaces on the grand staff and pitches with ledger lines.
- Examples of ties and slurs.
- Accent markings
- Key signatures
- Intervals within a major scale (2nds, 3rd, etc.).
- Common tempo markings (largo, adagio, andante, moderato, allegro, vivace, presto).
Expected behavior and habits:
- Attends class and extra rehearsals as needed.
- Consistently and punctually attends required performances and concerts.
- Positive behaviors and work ethic.
- Appropriate audience etiquette in a variety of settings.
- Show respect for all people in and out of the classroom setting.
