All recital scheduling should start here: https://sites.google.com/a/wmich.edu/music/recitals
For your official MUS 6900 Graduate Recital, there are additional procedures. Please contact the Graduate Advisor in the semester before your recital to get started.
1. Consult the Coordinator of Graduate Studies regarding the selection of your graduate recital committee. The committee must consist of a chairperson (usually your applied instructor), another member from your major area, and a faculty member from the Academic Area.
2. Type your name and the names of the committee members on the Progress Form received from the Graduate Advisor. Share this Google doc with all committee members for them to electronically sign and confirm their participation. The Graduate Coordinator will register you for MUS 6900.
3. Discuss possible recital dates with committee members, as well as dates they wouldn’t available to attend your recital. If there are no common dates, perhaps you need to contact other committee members. Initiate scheduling of your recital by submitting this form: sites.google.com/a/wmich.edu/music/recitals
4. Enter the Recital date/time/place on both the online and printed form. Obtain committee members’ signatures indicating their approval.
5. Schedule a Hearing date with the approval of your committee (and your fellow performers). The hearing should take place at least 2 weeks before the recital date or you risk cancellation/postponement of your recital date. It does not have to be in the same venue as the actual recital (e.g., could be a rehearsal room). Consult Concerts Office to reserve a room. Update this form with your Hearing date.
6. Schedule an Oral Exam date with the approval of your committee. This should be held no later than two weeks after your recital. It usually takes place in the School of Music Conference Room and is scheduled with the Music Office Assistant. Update this form with your Oral Exam date.
7. Approximately one month prior to you should submit the following forms: (1) “Recital Scheduling” and (2) “Recital Recording Request”. Your final program and recital details information must be submitted to the Concerts Office no later than two weeks before your recital. (This is separate from your Program Notes, which must be submitted to the Committee.)
8. For university archival purposes, all MUS 6900 Graduate Recitals must be recorded by Western Sound Studios (WSS). For on-campus MUS 6900 recitals, WSS will do the live-streaming, recording and produce an official CD for the Music Library. There is no fee for graduate students. For virtual or off-campus recitals, you may submit a stereo audio recording to WSS to be mastered and archived (also without an additional fee.) Off-campus recitals using WSS to record will incur additional charges (as will any special recording requests).
9. Prior to your hearing make certain that all graduate recital committee members approve of your recital program. Your program notes must be presented at the time of the hearing for committee approval or revision. It is recommended that you email a copy ahead of time and bring a printed copy. Some Areas have more specific requirements and deadlines for Program Notes; consult Chair.
10. After approval of your recital by the Committee Chair, you may make arrangements with the Concerts Office for a dress rehearsal in the appropriate hall. Solo piano recitals may schedule two rehearsals. It is your responsibility to make copies of your program notes to distribute at recital.
11. Prior to your Oral Exam, it is useful to consult with each member of your committee for advice on how best to prepare. You may also contact the Music Office to view previous oral exam questions. For Conducting students, a minimum of ten days before your oral exam, you will receive questions for which you will have 72 hours to submit a written response.
12. After your oral exam, it is recommended that you check with the Music Library to ensure that they received the official recording of your recital.
