Who We Are

West Lafayette High School Fencing Club

Why Fence??

In the great ole' d

ays, people had to learn to fence to defend themselves and their honor. Today we fence as a sport to improve ourselves and defend our honor as individuals, teams, and clubs/schools! :) OH yeah... its also quite fun!

Fencing is the historic art of offense and defense with a sword. Today, fencing actions are much faster than they were in the past and require more refinement of technique and skill. Modern fencing has become a safe sport due to protective clothing and flexible, blunted blade that are used while fencing. The objective of fencing is not to inflict injury, but to demonstrate an ability to outmaneuver an opponent and to score. Fencing is described as a chess match of human skill with a sword. Fencing is a vigorous sport that requires and develops stamina, quick reactions, speed and accuracy of movement, and excellent coordination. It is a mental game to out-think and out-witt your opponent.

Modern Fencing is one of the most complete sporting experiences since it utilizes many different physical and mental aspects. Fencers have to demonstrate mental and physical control over themselves while they try to over-come the same from their opponents.

The West Lafayette Fencing Club follows the rules of fencing established by the Unites States Fencing Association.

Etiquette

Fencing etiquette today reflects the general spirit that prevailed in the days of dueling; it is still a sport for people who conduct themselves as ladies and gentlemen, and the accepted standards of fencing are universal. Poor sportsmanship and unnecessary roughness is not tolerated and abusers will be disallowed. Fencing is and will remain a sport of tactic and technique between opponents. Protective clothing, including the mask will be worn at all times that a weapon is in hand. Protective clothing includes the jacket and mask and long pants. At no time will a participant face another opponent without these articles!
