Writing Activities

Handwriting is an important skill that is needed in all educational areas. It also adds to a child’s multi-sensory experience with letters, letter sounds, spelling and writing.

  • Practice! The only way to improve handwriting is to practice handwriting. Have your child make lists of television programs, gifts for holidays, or shopping lists.
  • Have your child use a variety of writing and drawing tools. Rather than just pencils and crayons, your child can also use markers, chalk, or “painting” outside with water. The more experiences your child has, the better.
  • Try different types of paper. Sometimes the type of paper used can make a big difference.
  • If your child is working on cursive writing, write all notes and letters to your child in cursive.
