In math, Mrs. Jones will be working with an enrichment group for Unit 4. She will take the fifth grade concepts and push students to dig deeper into the concepts.

Science

To infinity and beyond! We entered our solar system in science with our Sun, Moon, and Planets unit. We will start with sun and shadows, move onto the phases of the moon, and end with planet presentations.

Reading / Writing

Reading Workshop:

Unit: Legends

We are beginning a new unit: Legends! The students are learning about the different features of a legend, the various traits of heroes, and how they can use different annotating strategies to aid with their close reading of texts.

Read Aloud: A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park

A Long Walk to Water begins as two stories, told in alternating sections, about two eleven-year-olds in Sudan, a girl in 2008 and a boy in 1985. The girl, Nya, is fetching water from a pond that is two hours’ walk from her home: she makes two trips to the pond every day. The boy, Salva, becomes one of the "lost boys" of Sudan, refugees who cover the African continent on foot as they search for their families and for a safe place to stay.

Writing Workshop:

Argument Essay:

We are peer-editing and sharing our argument essays this week. All of our research and essays will be on display in the hallway after Thursday.
