Homework

Each student has a “back-and-forth” homework folder, containing homework and important notices. It is the student's responsibility to check his/her folder every day and keep the papers inside organized. It is the student's responsibility to make sure that the folder comes back to school each morning, along with the Homework Organizer. As students take increasing responsibility for their schoolwork, it is important that they take down their own homework assignments each day and check that it is completed. Homework should be completed independently most of the time, though parents and other family members are sometimes asked to participate in games and other assignments.

It is helpful for students to develop a homework routine at home, and if possible, find a consistent time and place for homework to be completed each night. There will be approximately 25 minutes of homework assigned each evening, in addition to 20 minutes of reading a just-right book four nights a week. Homework generally consists of Spelling Contract (due on Fridays) and a math or language arts assignment (usually due the following day). Long-term projects will be assigned as we study various topics this year.

Students are responsible for:

  • bringing back-and-forth folders to and from school with their organizer and appropriate homework
  • copying down assignment(s) and asking for clarification if unsure of task
  • handing in assignments that reflect their best effort on time

Parents can:

  • help your child find a consistent spot to complete homework
  • help your child plan a consistent time/schedule to complete homework
  • inform the teacher if recurring issues surrounding homework arise
