April 30th 2015

The Elementary Tech Team met on this day to continue the work we have done throughout the 2014-15 school year. Some of the highlights of the meeting are as follows:

1. We began a discussion on Learning Management Systems (LMS). This was the first of what is sure to be many discussions about how elementary teachers can use LMS to increase learning for all students.

2. Part of our group began to create a survey that will be sent out to all elementary teachers. The intent is to survey the teachers to plan for initial professional development needs in the area of technology.

3. Started to develop a communication plan (this website) so we can be sure to keep the rest of the elementary teaching staff updated on the work we have done this year and the work we will continue to do in the future.

MACUL 2015

A group of teachers from both the elementary and high school Technology Teams traveled to Detroit in March to take part in the MACUL Tech Conference. For those that don't know, MACUL is a huge technology conference that happens on an annual basis. Detroit and Grand Rapids alternate years as the host site for this conference.

This year, George Couros (@gcouros) was one of the keynote speakers. George talked about the power of Twitter and the importance for educators to start or continue to use technology as a way to network and grow professionally. He stated that educators "that are not using Twitter are quickly becoming illiterate."

Other highlights were learning about ways to use Google Drive and Google Classroom to help increase the level of student engagement, achievement, and collaboration inside of your classroom.

Finally, a lot of the team learned different ways to use apps or Web 2.0 tools to increase the variety and frequency in which teachers use formative assessment. It was a good conference and the Tech Team felt blessed for the opportunity to attend.
