Chromebook Desktop

The Shelf

The bottom of the desktop area on the Chromebook is known as "the shelf". From here, you can:

Open a Chrome browser window

"Pin" your apps of your choosing (remove by tapping touch pad with two fingers and selecting "unpin").

See your four most recently used apps, open all apps or go to the Web Store by clicking the magnifying glass.

You can re-position the shelf on the left or right side on the screen by two finger tapping and selecting "Shelf Position".

Status Area

Access the status area by clicking on your profile picture on the lower right.

It contains:

Network

Time / Date

Settings

Battery Life

Bluetooth Connections

Notifications (i.e. updates, managed by, etc.)

The Chromebook Help Center (which is the coolest thing ever)

Sign Out, Lock, and Shut Down

The App Launcher & Search

When this feature showed up in the Summer of 2015, I'll admit, I was thrown off. Where are the tiles I've come to know to access all of the installed apps on my Chromebook? Well, it was replaced with a new update. Instead, the small tiles have been replaced with a magnifying glass (i.e. the universal icon for 'search'). I suppose that is what Google is known for. Clicking the magnifying glass will give you:

Quick access to search the web

Your three most recently opened apps sandwiched between the Web Store on the left and All Apps on the right.

If you scroll down, you may see even more information (Weather, news updates, etc.)
