Come here to find out about how the Literacy Lab, Testing, classroom procedures, routines, and expectations are run.
Procedures...
Bathroom: Class bathroom breaks are given by the classroom teacher, they should be going before they come to the Literacy Lab, as our time is so short. Bathroom breaks are for emergencies only. So, if a student needs to go during class, it must be an emergency. To go they must raise their hand and ask respectfully. They will always be asked if they can make it to the end of our session or if they can wait until the end of the activity/before the next activity begins.
Raise your hand: If a student needs some something, all they need to do is raise their hand. If we are in the middle of teaching something, we will ask if it is an emergency or if it can wait just a moment while we finish our through/part of that lesson, so that it does not distract. Questions are important and we want students to ask, but we also want to model when the best opportunity to interrupt at a respectful time.
Pencils: If you pencil breaks or is dull, just hold it up and we will make a switch for you.
Tissues: If you the student needs a tissue they do not need to ask, as long as it is one person at a time so it does not interrupt the learning of others.
IF the procedures are not followed a warning will be given. If the redirection and modeling are prompted to the point that it is effecting the learning of others and themselves. the students will be given one 2 minute break sitting at an alternate space in the room, but will still be allowed to participate. If the behavers still continue students will receive a referral. The homeroom teacher and the parent/guardian will be contacted a student is given a break and/or a referral.
Routines...
Precision Partnering: When it is time to share our thinking students will quietly lean, look, and listen. They will be designated which partner will go first and how much time they have to share. Sentence frames are available to help guide discussions.
Activity Routines: Each teacher will have different routines when the students attend their small group. But all routines will be established within the first 2-3 days, so it is important they do not miss a small group session.
6 Minute Solutions: If your child does 6 minute solutions with us in the Literacy Lab the routine is to come in and take out their recording sheet. Partner A will have the story/dry erase marker and Partner B will have the story/pencil. The teacher will the students one minute (ready... 3, 2, 1, go) and partner B will read while partner A follows along and marking any misues. If a students does not say the work within 3 seconds, the partner will mark it as a miscue. After the 1 minute is up, partner A will count how many words were read in the one minute and partner B will record this on his/her recording sheet. Partner A will then count the miscues and partner B will record. Partner A will read one miscue word at a time while partner B looks and rereads the miscued word(s) 3 times for accuracy and fluency. After all of this, partner A and B will switch rolls and materials. This activity will start over again with the same direction with the rolls reversed. The teacher will be there observing and assisting the entire time. To clean up students will put their recording sheet back with their story and the teacher will collect all the materials. The activity should take no more that 6 minutes total, hence the name of the activity 6 minute solutions.
Behavior Tracking: Each student will earn a star/sticker/stamp for trying their very best with what ever activities were done in small group that day. At the end of the learning week if student earned 3, then they can go to the treasure box. Also, at the end of the learning small group cycle students can use those stars to earn a FUN DAY. Students can also earn treats at the end of each small group session. This is up to the leader (teacher) of the small group. It can be and the end of each day or just on Fridays. This can be a sticker, a little treasure box prize, or a tiny sweet treat.
Eagle's R.O.C.K.S. Tickets: Students can also earn Eagle Pride Tickets for the many ways by modeling how they show they R.O.C.K.S. There is no limit to how many they can earn!!
If your child needs more reading support, I can provide you with a "parent/child support google classroom" code that will have activities with home/school connection activities. Please request this with an email and I can send you the code for your child to join.
Expectations...
Lining Up: Students will line with no more than a level 1 voice.
Coming into the classroom: Students are required to walk into the classroom quietly (level 1) with walking feet.
Working in small groups: Students will come ready to work with a positive attitude and a smile. Be ready to try something new.
Desk/Table Maintenance: Desks/Tables are required to stay clean and neat. All materials are required to be in their rightful place as the teacher has set out and prepared for the learning session.

Backpacks/Lunchboxes/Folders do not need to come to the literacy lab, please keep them in the classroom with your homeroom teacher.
School Wide Discipline Plan:
Here at Sahuaro we are implementing a new school wide discipline program, Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS). All teachers will be on the same page with this. This first week of school we will be going through stations around campus introducing, modeling, and practicing school wide expectations so that all students will understand the rules and expectations on the school campus. We will also have volume level charts posted around campus and in the classrooms so that students have a universal understanding of what the volume expectations are in any given area of the school campus. Teachers will use positive reinforcement to help guide students reinforce well followed rules, routines, and procedures. If students choose to break those rules, routines, and/or procedures students will respectfully redirected with warnings, if the unwanted behaviors persist after the redirection students can then be given a redirection break in the classroom/neighboring classroom, may have to write a redirection plan, and/or may be given a referral. If behavior is severe, Mrs. Mowery or the Student Service Specialist will be called in to remove the student. If your child is sent sent out of the literacy lab due to repeated undesirable behaviors that is impeding on the learning of others or themselves, a phone call/ClassDojo notification by myself and/or the teacher will occur. If the behavior still persists, a parent teacher conference will be set up so that we can all work as a team to support your child to be successful.
Again, PBIS is about learning how to positively redirect unwanted behaviors. We all make mistakes; it is just how we learn from those mistakes to better our experiences in life. But, it order for this to happen teachers and other school staff must teach, model, and have the students practice the desired expectations. Using this school wide discipline plan will help create a positive and safe learning environment for ALL students here at Sahuaro. Sahuaro students R.O.C.K.S!
