Future Research

I am currently working on two projects, one related to international law and political violence in colonial empires, the other to the role of political violence in processes of anti-colonial revolt and decolonization:

Civilized Barbarism: Colonial Violence in World Politics. A book manuscript that examines when colonial powers targeted civilians, using a dataset of 193 cases of colonial wars from 1816 to 2003 and seven detailed historical case studies of civilian harm in colonial wars.

"'In Civilized War': International Law, The Hague Conferences, and the Shadow of Empire." A paper that explores how efforts by the Hague Conferences to codify the laws and customs of war dealt with questions of imperialism and empire.

"'Bombing without Occupation': Airpower, Counterinsurgency, and the 1920 Iraq Revolt." A paper that explore the role of airpower in counterinsurgency campaigns, drawing on archival documents related to the 1920 Iraq revolt.

"The Paradox of Political Violence: Insurgency, Counterinsurgency, and Decolonization." A paper that examines when and how political violence can both slow or accelerate moves towards political independence, based on archival documents related to the 1952 Mau Mau uprising.
