Photography

General Overview

In addition to exploring photography as a means of expression and developing personal aesthetics, this program offers students a depth of technical knowledge and preparation to successfully transition into one or more sectors of the photographic industry. Career paths that are considered by students on their journey in the program include working in portraiture, fine-arts, journalism, academia and teaching, marketing, or law enforcement and forensic science. Graduates of the program are employed as photographic assistants and/or digital technicians at studios across the country, work in photography lab or print operation environments, operate self-employed businesses, or transfer to four-year art schools to pursue their Bachelor's degree.

Program Offerings

WCC’s photography program provides students with state-of-the-art photographic imaging facilities and access to an incredible range of image capture devices. Our lab space includes a 20-workstation black-and-white darkroom, a 6-bay studio featuring tungsten and strobe lighting equipment, and two digital imaging labs and production facilities that employ the highest standards in computer hardware and software.

Students also have access to a wide range of cameras and camera-related equipment. Students enrolled in the program can rent, free-of-charge:

  • Cameras ranging from 35mm SLR film cameras, digital SLR cameras, digital mirrorless cameras, and medium and large format view cameras

  • Lenses ranging from macro to telephoto to tilt-shifts lenses

  • Other peripherals including tripods, reflectors, light meters, and environmental lighting equipment

With small class sizes and hands-on instruction, students experience one-on-one contact with their instructor, and participate in a dynamic, interactive learning environment.

Students can also tailor the program to meet their career interests by choosing specialized electives that include interdisciplinary options from other DMA programs, such as Animation, Graphic Design, Digital Video, or Web Design & Development.
