2016 - 2017 Senior Words of Wisdom

8 Seniors lead the Wildcats this season. Seven of the eight were a part of the first WCA JV and C field hockey teams. This year, these seniors helped our program continue to build and "Level up. " They were excellent role models, Running the race to win and honoring God on and off the playing field.

Abbi Barron #21 "Field hockey has meant so much more to me than a sport, or just something to do in my free time that didn’t create more hospital visits. All I was looking for was a new activity that didn’t cause me to get injured for my sake, my parents sake and doctors everywhere. I did not know I would like field hockey so much. Field hockey has allowed me to play a sport again. My advice to younger players is, no matter what sport you play, don’t let a letter define you. Whether it’s a V for varsity, J and a v or a C, let the team and how you play define you. Varsity is great and it’s amazing to play a varsity sport especially at a school like Westminster, but if you let that define who you are as a person you will not get anywhere. Working hard on JV may define you more as a player, one that works hard rather than just a player who is on varsity. This advice is not to tell you what to do or how you should play a sport, more less to tell you something that will save you from stressing out because we all know WCA students don’t need anymore stress. So now you can go home to that mountain of homework and stress about that instead."

Graci Barron #24 "Many other seniors are probably going to say something along the lines of remember to have fun and enjoy your time as a Wildcat field hockey player, but as some may know, I don't like sounding or looking like someone else. (hint: Abbi and I dress alike) In my opinion, the thing that I want to leave all of you with is that whatever letter that is in front of what team your on, whether C, JV, or V, shouldn't matter. The only things that should matter is that when all together those teams are one strong program that will keep growing and developing our skills until we are the ones scoring 11 against our opponents. The other thing that should matter is how we play and who we play for. Many other schools and refs have noticed they way we keep fighting when down and how our attitude towards our teammates and others is kind and loving. And most importantly other teams and refs hopefully see that we don't just play for that W, but for a greater purpose. "

Rachel Berry #12 "My freshman year, Mr Munger was reading the announcements and mentioned a field hockey club was being started. I knew absolutely nothing about the sport, but I decided to try it. I joined the club team that year, and we learned the basics of the game and even participated in some scrimmages against other teams. Those joint practices were terrifying as we barely knew which side of the stick to hit the ball with and were still baffled by the confusing rules of such a complicated sport. After 4 years I'm proud to be able to say I helped to start this program, and I cannot believe how far we've come. The first year we had a real team I was on the c team, and we didn't score a goal all season. Now we are winning games and are actual competitors against schools who have had field hockey teams for decades. I can't believe that 4 years went by so quickly, and I cannot wait to see the amazing things this program will accomplish in the future. Field hockey is much more than a sport for me. Yes, it's a fun way to spend my time, but it also means the amazing group of people that I've been lucky to be able to play with and memories that I will never forget. Advice that I would give to younger players is to never give up. As cliche as it sounds, practice does make perfect, and field hockey is a complicated sport. You will never master a hit or a reverse sweep or whatever it may be without perseverance. And I think we already do have so much perseverance which is evident by how far we have come in a few short years. Just last week we lost to Burroughs 2-0 and held them scoreless in the second half; last year that game would have ended like the villa game earlier this season. In the end we have come a long way since that first club team, but we have so much farther to go. In a few years as the program continues to grow, we will continue to get better and eventually will be able to beat teams like Burroughs and Villa. I cannot wait to come back and watch those games and know that I was a part of this amazing sport at the very beginning and helped to make it possible for all of those future wildcats to fall in love with field hockey just like I have. "

Hallie Kaiping #6 "Playing field hockey has been an incredible experience for me. I have grown so much as a player and as a person thanks to the WCA field hockey program. Before last year, I didn't even know how to hold a field hockey stick, and I would never have believed I could come this far. I have been endlessly encouraged by incredible coaches and just-as-incredible teammates who constantly push me to be the best I can be, on & off the field. My advice to younger players would be to take advantage of their time in the program. It may seem like forever until you graduate, but trust me, time flies when you're having fun; you'll be at your own senior night before you know it. Make the most of the time you have. Give it your all, and you will get so much it return. I am so thankful for the coaches who have poured into me & the friends I have made through WCA field hockey. This program has so much offer, & I have been beyond blessed to be a part of it."

Sidney Keane #11 "Being able to be apart of a team as amazing as this has been such a cool experience. I have loved watching the program grow and the teams get better and better game by game and year by year. I never thought I'd grow to love the sport the way that I do, and if you would have asked me 4 years ago what field hockey was I wouldn't have been able to tell you. I have learned so much and grown enormously through my experiences on this team. My advice for upcoming field hockey girls is to try new things and not be afraid to mess up."

Callie MacDonald #22 "My 3 years in this program have been so amazing. The field hockey program at WCA does such a great job of uniting a bunch of girls from different friend groups and backgrounds. The biggest piece of advice that I want the younger girls to know is that hard work truly pays off in the end. When I first started my sophomore year, I was terrible and whiffed the ball almost every time. Now, as a senior, I look around at not only myself, but all my teammates and am truly impressed with how far we have come as a team. I can't wait to come back in a few years and see how much more the program has progressed!"

Alayna Marusiodis #34 "These past two seasons of field hockey have been some of the greatest times of my life. I love this team so much! I love watching everyone improve greatly and I love seeing the unbreakable bond this team has. There's something special about this team and I feel honored to be apart of something so wonderful! My word of advice for the younger girls is that when things get tough don't give up. Persevere! Keep fighting! You will be rewarded eventually just some things take time. Overall, some of my fondest memories in high school have been involved with being a part of this team. I'm going to miss every single person immensely and this team has a special place in my heart. "

Hailey Rupprecht #28 "The greatest character of all time, Winnie the Pooh, once said “How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” I hate saying goodbye because it’s so impossibly hard for me to ever think about leaving something. So this is not a goodbye, but shall I say, a see you later. Endings are a funny thing, especially here and now. The roller coaster of emotions is— interesting. It’s hilarious to think back to my sophomore year and realize that I had barely heard of field hockey, yet now I can, sometimes, explain the rules to my parents. I know it’s been frustrating to lose a lot of games, but guys, we’ve only been an official team for 3 years, and a varsity for 2. After 2 years of varsity, we’ve gone from losing to Burroughs by 7 (and let’s be honest - they were taking it easy the last half) to holding them and making them frustrated the next year. Don’t lose heart. Next year you guys will probably score on them, if not win. Keep fighting and strive everyday to get better. This team has meant everything to me. Every single one of you. High school is rough, and normally when people are given the option to stay after school for an extra two and a half hours they say heck no and double check to make sure you’re okay because nobody should want to do that. But this team makes it worth it 100%. You guys are hilarious and become the highlight in my bad days. I mean I am going to miss the campus loop, but I think I’ll miss the teammates just a little bit more. The coaches have also been one of the biggest blessings in my life. Honestly sophomore year I was so worried that Coach Schmer would hate children and be a bitter seed, but as we can all tell, she’s the exact opposite. Coaches, y’all are so genuine and you actually care and love us, and I believe that is why we are growing so much as a program. I would not have been back if the coaches were mean and horrible, but I can honestly say that their leadership and love for Jesus, us, and the sport, has changed me and is what brought me back each year. It’s hard to fathom this being my last hoorah on this team. But one thing I need to make sure that is said is this: trust in the Lord in every situation. I promise you, whatever you’re going through, no matter where you are, God not only loves you, but He likes you and wants to spend time with you. In this crazy life He is the only constant that we can hold onto. 2 corinthians 4:16-18 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self[a] is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. So, this is not a goodbye, but an I’ll see y’all later. Each and every one of you have changed my life for the better, and I can’t thank you enough. Fhock on. "
