Alan Gallagher founded VSI in 1998.

Alan began by opening a retail computer store in the early 80's, before the IBM PC. He developed custom database software and provided network administration services for state government for over 10 years. In the late 90's he became interested in the Internet and discovered network security. He learned the details of how networks operated and taught himself how to be a hacker. He was known as a "gray hat" hacker. A gray hat hacker does not have permission to access a network but does no harm. Note: At that time hacking was not illegal. He learned how to break into networks all over the world, manufacturing plants, major telecommunication companies, law offices and casinos. He obtained numerous technical network and professional cyber security certifications. With these professional credentials he created VSI and obtained their first government cyber security project designing and implementing a secure enterprise network in a very hostile environment at the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, Colombia, South America. During the next decade Virtual Security International completed cyber security projects for numerous U.S. government agencies, the U.S. Army, USAF, major prime contractors and financial organizations (see Clients). VSI's expertise ranges from very low level firewall configuration details to national level cyber security checklists, guidance and policy.

Alan offers over 23 years of cyber security experience and more than 32 years IT experience. – He has accumulated a broad knowledge base that includes three years of national level cyber security policy development and involvement in the early stages of NIST’s control system adaption of SP 800-53 and SP-800-82 documents (National Cyber Security Division of DHS). He performed the first risk assessment of the on-board control system network of the “NextGen” aircraft, the Boeing 787 and has developed a number of white papers while conducting cutting edge cyber security research for NASA, the Dept of Defense and FAA. He prepared an analysis of the Great Northeast Power Blackout of 2003 for DHS NCSD when a cyber-incident caused power failure for over 50 million people. He has an active Defense Dept. Top Secret Security Clearance and has performed dozens of cyber risk assessments of sensitive mission critical systems for civil government, the military and major financial institutions. He has extensive experience with enterprise level Cyber Security Risk Assessments, Continuity of Operations, Disaster Recovery Plans and Firewall penetration testing. He has completed numerous Certification and Authorization (C&A) processes using NIST 800 Series Documents, DOD’s DITSCAP, DIACAP and FAA’s SCAP methodologies.
