My Philosophy in Teaching

Based on my teaching experiences, I believe that effective teacher should be passionate about their subjects. Some topics like nutrient, reproduction, statistics can be quite overwhelming for students from a different background making it extremely challenging for teacher to motivate or engage everyone in the classroom. However, these hurdles can be overcome if teacher exudes curiosity and passion about his subject thereby inspiring students to find their own interest in the subject matter. In addition, effective delivery of the course material is very important. The information should be presented in a manner that is easily understood, organized and appropriate for the level of the course. Moreover, it is paramount to present most up-to-date teaching material keeping up with the advancements in the field. The course material should not only contain the basic principles but also latest information from research programs. Because I would be expected to maintain active research program, I would seek to integrate my research into classroom activities, exposing students to up-to-date research materials and familiarizing them with latest techniques used during research. I’m completely committed to ensuring that the students are in an environment where they want to learn, because they can apply the knowledge they are learning. I’m most excited when students tell me they were discussing something they learned in class with their friends and a new question arose. At that point I am merely disseminating information, the students are teaching themselves. Above all, I firmly believe that instructors should be approachable in their demeanor and available to address issues that may arise in both a group setting and on an individual basis. This may be greatly enhanced by having an “open-door” policy whereby students can contact the instructor through email, in person, through a class representative etc. To conclude, my teaching would be primarily based on effective communication, promoting greater student participation and expecting students to think critically and develop problem solving skills based on the information provided during coursework. I strongly believe that “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.”Albert Einstein. Moreover, with the skills I have acquired with several opportunities to teach, I strongly believe that I can prepare and teach appropriate course material.
